Rockwood ROC-405-US26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How far off the wall does the Rockwood 405 wall stop hold a door?
The 405 has a 1 inch projection, so the door face stops about an inch clear of the finished wall. That is enough to keep a lever or a pull ring off the drywall on most standard openings, but it is a short stop: if the door carries a deep pull, a paddle, or a projecting exit device that reaches past an inch, the trim hits the wall before the bumper does and you need a longer wall stop instead.
2) Will the Rockwood 405 wall stop mount to a drywall wall, or does it need masonry?
The 405 ships with a #8-32 x 1 inch truss head machine screw and a lead anchor. That anchor set is drilled into solid backing, so masonry, block, or plaster over solid substrate takes it directly. On hollow drywall, drill into a stud or add solid blocking behind the finish, otherwise the fastener pulls out the first time the door swings hard. The mounting is concealed once the stop is on, so there is no exposed screw head in the finish.
3) Is the Rockwood 405 wall stop rated for commercial traffic, and does it meet ANSI/BHMA?
It is a commercial grade stop, cast brass with a rubber bumper rather than a stamped or spring type, and it certifies to ANSI A156.16 under type number L02251. That is the standard an institutional or MRO spec writer will be looking for on a door stop line item, so the 405 can be written into a facility standard by type number.
4) What do I order if the wall behind the door is too far away for a 1 inch wall stop?
A 1 inch projection stop only works when the wall sits directly behind the door swing. If the baseboard, a chair rail, or a recess puts the wall further back, the door swings past the stop and hits something else. Go to a longer wall stop: the ABH RM and RMS Series wall door stops both come in multiple length options for exactly that condition. Where there is no usable wall at all, the answer is a floor stop or an overhead stop, not a wall stop.
5) The wall behind my door is too far back for a 1 inch projection stop. What should I use instead of the Rockwood 405?
The Rockwood 405 projects 1 inch off the wall, so it only works when the knob or edge of the door reaches the wall within that distance. When the gap is greater, a longer stem stop is the fix: the ABH RM Series and ABH RMS Series wall door stops are both offered with multiple length options, so the projection can be matched to the actual standoff. Both are wall mounted like the 405, so the stop still lands on the wall rather than the floor.
6) I need the door to stay open, not just stop. Is the Rockwood 405 the wrong part?
Yes, for hold-open the 405 is the wrong choice. It is a wall stop, so it arrests the door's swing and nothing more. To hold the leaf open, the Ives WS20 is a manual wall holder with a hinged strike for drywall and masonry applications, engaged by hand, and the Ives WS40 is an automatic wall holder with a heavy duty bumper pad that catches the door as it swings. Both mount to the wall in the same location the 405 would occupy, and the WS20 requires a strike on the door leaf that a plain stop like the 405 does not.
7) What is a good alternative to the Rockwood 405 wall stop if the bumper needs to be replaceable?
The 405 is a solid cast brass body with a rubber bumper. If you are stocking for a building where bumpers get chewed up and you want the rubber swapped rather than the whole stop replaced, the Ives WS11 and the Ives WS33 are both heavy duty wall stops with a replaceable rubber bumper, and both are set up for drywall or masonry. For a lighter residential or light commercial opening, the Delaney 2-1/4 inch concave wall bumper is the smaller diameter concave option, and the Emtek 2255 brass wall bumper mounts with a rosette.
8) Do I need to order anything else to install a Rockwood 405 wall stop?
No extra hardware for the stop itself. Each one comes with its #8-32 x 1 inch truss head machine screw and anchor, which is the complete mounting kit. What you supply is the drill bit for the anchor and, on hollow drywall, blocking or a stud to land in. There is no strike plate to order, since the 405 only stops the door and does not hold it.
9) My wall will not take a stop where the door hits. What mounts on the door or base instead of a Rockwood 405?
The 405 anchors into the wall with a #8-32 x 1 inch truss head machine screw and anchor, so it needs solid wall backing at the strike point. Where that backing does not exist, the Delaney 3 inch spring door stop and the Delaney 3 inch HD rigid door stop are base-mounted stops that take the impact at the bottom of the door instead of at knob height. The spring version flexes on contact and the rigid version does not, so the choice depends on how much give the opening can tolerate.
10) What finishes does the Rockwood 405 wall stop come in?
Three: 626 satin chrome, 619 satin nickel, and BSP black suede powder coat. 626 is the usual match for commercial lever and closer hardware in a school or office; 619 reads slightly warmer and pairs with satin nickel trim; BSP is the one to pick when the door hardware and frames are black. Pick the stop finish to match what is already on the lock, not the wall.
11) We standardize on satin chrome across a building. Which wall stops line up with a Rockwood 405 in 626?
The Rockwood 405 is offered in 626 satin chrome, 619 satin nickel, and BSP black suede powder coat, so a facility standardizing on any of those three can carry one model across the openings. Where a different projection or a hold-open is needed at some doors, the ABH RM Series and RMS Series wall stops cover multiple lengths and the Ives WS20 wall holder covers hold-open, keeping the wall-mounted approach consistent across the building.
