Rockwood ROC-467 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How is the Rockwood 467 door stop anchored to a concrete floor?
The 467 is grouted in, not screwed down. You drill a 1 inch diameter hole 2-1/2 inches deep and fill it with anchoring grout, then set the stop. That is why there are no exposed fasteners on it, and it is the reason it holds up where a screw-anchored dome stop gets kicked loose. Plan the hole depth into your slab before you commit, since 2-1/2 inches into concrete is a real drill job, not a plastic anchor.
2) What door stop should I use in a behavioral health or detention area where hardware gets abused?
This is exactly what the Rockwood 467 is for. It has no exposed fasteners to pick at, a flame resistant high impact bumper, and it grouts into the concrete rather than sitting on screws. Rockwood states it is accepted by the New York State Office of Mental Health for use in high risk areas. A conventional dome stop or a gooseneck holder like the Ives FS13 or Orca 22HD Series gives an occupant something to pry, unscrew, or tie off to; the 467 does not.
3) Does the Rockwood 467 hold a door open, or does it only stop it?
Stop only. The 467 arrests the door swing and nothing more, there is no holder arm or catch. If the requirement is to keep the door standing open, look at a holder instead, such as the Ives FS40 / FS41 / FS42 / FS43 automatic floor stop and holder, the SOSS MDH magnetic door holder and stop, or the Orca 22HD Series, which is listed as a door holder.
4) What is the closest equivalent to the Rockwood 467 door stop for a high security or detention opening?
The Ives FS18S/FS18L security floor stop is the nearest match in intent. Both are heavy duty floor stops built for openings where a standard dome stop would be pried or removed, and the Rockwood 467 anchors with no exposed fasteners, set into a 1 inch diameter by 2-1/2 inch deep hole filled with anchoring grout, so there is nothing on the surface for someone to attack. The Ives FS18S/FS18L is offered in short and long versions of the same security stop.
5) What should I use instead of the Rockwood 467 if I cannot core drill the floor?
The Rockwood 467 requires a 1 inch diameter by 2-1/2 inch deep hole filled with anchoring grout, which means core drilling concrete. Where that is not possible, a surface mounted dome stop such as the Ives FS13 heavy duty brass floor dome stop with replaceable rubber bumper or the Ives FS17 heavy duty brass floor dome stop with rubber bumper fastens to the finished floor instead. The Orca Hardware 23LP Series is a low rise dome floor stop with a gray tip for the same surface mounted approach.
6) I need the door to stay open, not just stop. Is the Rockwood 467 the right part?
No. The Rockwood 467 is a stop only, a flame resistant high impact bumper that halts the door and lets it swing back. For an opening that has to hold, the Ives FS40, FS41, FS42 and FS43 are automatic floor stops and holders with adjustable door to floor clearance, the SOSS MDH is a magnetic door holder and stop measuring 3-5/16 inches by 1-3/4 inches, and the Orca Hardware 22HD Series goose neck floor stop with black tip is a door holder for 1-3/8 inch or 1-3/4 inch doors.
7) Is a solid brass floor bumper a substitute for the Rockwood 467 in a psychiatric or behavioral health facility?
They are different classes of part. The Rockwood 467 is accepted by the New York State Office of Mental Health for use in high risk areas, has no exposed fasteners, and is grouted into the slab. The Deltana UFB4505 round universal floor door bumper is 1-1/2 inches in solid brass, the UFBD3505 is a 3-1/2 inch decorative round bumper, the UFBP4505 is a 1-5/8 inch pattern cap bumper, and the UFBS138 is a 1-3/8 inch square bumper. Those are decorative surface bumpers for finished interiors rather than parts specified for high risk areas.
8) Will the Rockwood 467 stop work mounted on a wall instead of the floor?
Yes. The 467 is suitable for concrete floor or wall mounting, using the same grouted 1 inch by 2-1/2 inch deep hole either way. On a wall it goes into the concrete or block behind, so it is not an option on a hollow stud partition.
9) What finish does the Rockwood 467 come in?
Black only. The bumper is a flame resistant high impact material in black, and the 467 is a single model with no finish options, so there is no brass or satin chrome version of it. If the job needs the stop to match brass or bronze trim on the other openings, a solid brass floor bumper such as the Deltana UFB4505 or the Ives FS17 brass floor dome stop is the finish-matched direction, though neither is a grouted-in security stop.
10) Which heavy duty floor stop has a bumper I can replace when it wears out?
The Ives FS13 is a heavy duty brass floor dome stop with a replaceable rubber bumper. The Rockwood 467 takes a different approach for high traffic and abuse: the whole unit is a flame resistant high impact bumper set into a grouted hole with no exposed fasteners, so there is no separate tip to service or remove.
11) The door has a large gap to the floor. Does the Rockwood 467 reach, or do I need a gooseneck stop?
The Rockwood 467 rises 3-1/2 inches from the floor with a 2 inch diameter body, so it meets the door face at that height. Where the door bottom clears the floor by more than a stop of that height can catch, a gooseneck reaches up to the door instead: the Delaney gooseneck floor door stop, the Emtek 2253 goose style door stop, and the Orca Hardware 22HD Series goose neck floor stop with black tip, which is listed for 1-3/8 inch or 1-3/4 inch doors.
12) Can I standardize a whole facility on the Rockwood 467, or do some openings need a different stop?
The Rockwood 467 covers the openings where the floor is concrete and the stop has to resist abuse, since it grouts into the slab with no exposed fasteners and suits concrete floor or wall mounting. Openings that need the door held open take the Ives FS40, FS41, FS42 or FS43 automatic floor stop and holder or the SOSS MDH magnetic door holder and stop, and openings on finished floors where drilling and grouting is not wanted take a surface mounted heavy duty dome stop such as the Ives FS13 or Ives FS17.
13) Is the Rockwood 467 a residential door stop or a commercial one?
Commercial. Rockwood specifies the 467 for institutional buildings, offices, retail, educational, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants. For a house or an apartment interior door, the grouted concrete installation is more work than the opening warrants, and a decorative surface bumper like the Deltana UFBD3505 or the Emtek 2251 half dome stop is the usual choice there.
