Rockwood 486 Angle Door Stop, Steel with rubber bumper

The 486 angle stop is made for undercut doors up to 1-1/2 inches. It stands 2-5/8 inches tall at the wall or floor face, so it catches the door edge above the gap instead of passing under it. If your undercut is deeper than 1-1/2 inches, an angle stop is the wrong tool and you want a taller kick-down or a wall stop instead.

Mounting hardware is included: two #12 x 1-1/2 inch flat head sheet metal screws and two plastic anchors. The anchors cover drywall or hollow block; if you are fastening into concrete or a steel floor you will want to supply your own anchors to suit.

It is a commercial-grade stop, steel bodied with a rubber bumper, which is what holds up in institutional traffic where a cast zinc or plastic stop gets broken off. For a lighter-duty opening, the Ives FS434 steel angle floor stop is the light duty equivalent.

Both are steel angle stops that mount to the floor, but they are built for different traffic. The Ives FS434 is a light duty stop, so it suits interior residential-grade openings and low-traffic rooms. The Rockwood 486 is a commercial stop, and Rockwood door accessories are used on institutional buildings, offices, retail, educational, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants. If you are stopping a tenant bedroom door, the FS434 covers it; if you are stopping a corridor or classroom door that swings hundreds of times a day, the 486 is the one built for that cycle.

Footprint is 1 x 2-1/2 inches with an overall height of 2-5/8 inches. That is a small enough base to sit tight against a baseboard or in a door casing reveal without becoming a trip point in a corridor.

An angle stop like the 486 is the answer when the wall behind the door is too far away, is glass, or is millwork you cannot drill, and the door has an undercut a low floor dome would slip past. It anchors to the floor and takes the strike on the angled face. A wall bumper is the cleaner choice when the door swings into a solid wall within reach of the door edge, since nothing sits on the floor to sweep or trip over. Where the door needs to stay open, neither one holds it, and you want a stop with a hold-open.

The Ives FS434 is the light duty steel angle floor stop in the same family of part. For unit interior doors - bedrooms, closets, bathrooms - where the door is stopped a few times a day and the floor is finished, the FS434 is the appropriate duty level. Move up to the Rockwood 486 for the openings in the building that take abuse: the leasing office, the corridor, the trash room, the amenity space. Many property managers standardize on both, one for behind the unit door and one for common areas, so the maintenance cart carries the right stop for the opening it is at.

Do not count on it. Both are angle floor stops that anchor to the floor, but they are different manufacturers' patterns and neither is published as a hole-for-hole retrofit of the other. The Rockwood 486 ships with its own anchors - 2 each #12 x 1-1/2 inch flat head sheet metal screws and 2 plastic anchors - so if you are swapping an Ives FS434 out for a 486 you should plan on drilling fresh holes and setting the supplied anchors rather than reusing what is in the slab. On a tile or terrazzo floor that matters, because the old holes will still be visible next to the new stop.
