1) Is the 8035 shear lock the ROFU 21054 mounts fail-safe or fail-secure?
Fail-safe. The mini shear lock releases when power drops, so the opening free-wheels on a power failure or a fire alarm relay drop. Plan for that on egress: if your authority having jurisdiction wants the door to stay locked without power, a shear lock is the wrong device family and you should be looking at mechanical locking with electrified trim instead.
2) Why does the 21054 come as a pair instead of a single housing?
A shear lock is two pieces: the electromagnet body and the strike armature that shears against it. The 21054 is sold as a pair because you need a housing for each half, one on the frame or header and one on the door leaf. One opening takes one kit.
3) Can I use ROFU mini shear locks with surface housings on a fire rated door?
Treat that as a spec question for your AHJ, not a catalog one. 4) Should I use a mini shear lock or a surface mount maglock on my door?
Shear locks hold the door in the plane of the leaf, so nothing protrudes into the opening once the housings are on, and they suit doors where an exposed mag body on the header looks wrong or gets in the way. Direct pull surface mags like the Camden CX-91S for a single door or the CX-92 for a pair are simpler to install, mount entirely on the frame face and need no door prep at all, but the magnet and armature are visible. 5) Does the ROFU 21054 housing kit run on batteries or does it need power at the door?
The lock it houses is a wired electric device with no battery option, so the opening needs power run to it, plus whatever access control releases it. The 21054 itself is passive metalwork and draws nothing; all the current goes to the 8035 inside it.
6) Are ROFU 21054 housings rated for commercial traffic or are they light duty?
Commercial. The housings and the mini shear lock family behind them are commercial access control hardware, which is what you want on an opening in an office building, a multi-family common area or an institutional corridor rather than a residential-grade product.
7) What makes the 21054 housings tamper proof?
The 21054 pair is the tamperproof version of the surface housing for the 8035, which is the set you want on the unsecure side of an opening or anywhere the public can reach the lock. Standard housings leave the fastener heads workable; the tamperproof pair is specified when the lock body has to resist being opened up from outside.
