Sargent 1431C-EN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Sargent 1431C cover fit any door closer, or only the Sargent 1431?
Only Sargent 1431 series closers. The 1431C is a series-specific shell sized to that closer body, so it will not seat correctly on another Sargent series or on a Norton, LCN or Dorma closer. If the closer on your door is not stamped 1431, this is the wrong cover. Check the body casting before ordering, because closer covers of different series often look nearly identical from across a lobby.
2) My Sargent closer cover is cracked or missing after a break-in. Can I buy just the cover?
Yes, the 1431C is sold as a standalone replacement part, so a damaged or missing shell can be swapped without touching the closer itself. It goes on over the existing mechanism, which means the arm, mounting and adjustment stay as they are and the door does not have to come out of service for a full closer replacement.
3) Does a door closer cover actually stop tenants from adjusting the closer?
It puts a physical barrier over the valves and adjustment screws, which is what stops the casual tampering property managers see most: a tenant who thinks the door slams too hard and backs the sweep valve out with a screwdriver. The 1431C is meant to shield the closer from that kind of unauthorized adjustment and from vandalism. It is a deterrent shell, not a locked enclosure, so treat it as protection against the person with a pocket screwdriver rather than against someone with tools and time.
4) Is a closer cover worth adding on a dusty warehouse or industrial door?
That is one of the places it earns its keep. The 1431C shields the closer mechanism from dust, debris and environmental elements that can foul operation, and it is built for commercial duty rather than light residential use. On a high-traffic industrial, warehouse or loading-area opening where airborne grit settles on everything, covering the closer body keeps that off the valves and out of the arm pivot.
