Sargent 281J ED – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Sargent 281J-ED cover plate actually do on a door closer?
It is a cover plate, not a closer or a bracket that carries load. The 281J-ED conceals the mounting hardware on a Sargent 281 Series closer installation so the finished job looks clean. If you need the closer body itself, or an arm, this part will not substitute for either.
2) Will the Sargent 281J-ED fit closers other than the 281 Series?
No. The 281J-ED is made specifically for the Sargent 281 Series closer line, and fit is not claimed for any other series or brand. If the closer on your door is a different Sargent series or another manufacturer's unit, order the cover plate for that series instead.
3) What finish does the Sargent 281J-ED cover plate come in?
One finish only: 693 black painted. That matches the black 281 Series closer components, so if the closers in your building are a different finish the plate will stand out.
4) Do I need anything else besides the 281J-ED to finish a 281 Series closer install?
The 281J-ED covers the mounting hardware only. Mounting screws, the closer body, arm and any drop plate or bracket your mounting method calls for are separate items, so order those alongside it if you are building up a complete closer assembly.
5) Is this cover plate suitable for high traffic commercial openings, or is it residential grade?
Commercial. The 281J-ED is a commercial-grade installation accessory used on office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, industrial and warehouse spaces, multi-tenant residential and government buildings. For a facility standardizing closer appearance across many doors, it is the same part on every 281 Series unit.
