Sargent 6275LA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Sargent 6275 key blank work in my Sargent LFIC core?
The Sargent 6275 is a 6-pin blank cut for Large Format Interchangeable Core cylinders, so it works in an LFIC housing running a 6-pin core. What it will not do is cover you if your cores are 7-pin or if they are small format (SFIC) interchangeable cores. Pin count and keyway both have to match the core you are pinning, so pull an existing key and confirm the pin count before you order a box of blanks.
2) Which Sargent keyway do I need to order for the 6275 blank?
The 6275 blank comes in ten Sargent keyways: LA, LB, LC, LE, LF, LG, LJ, LK and LL. There is no universal option, the blank has to match the keyway your cores are already pinned to. Look at the bow of a working key or the paperwork from your keying schedule, find the keyway letter, and order that one. An LB blank will not enter an LC core.
3) Can I get Sargent 6275 key blanks stamped Do Not Duplicate?
Both ways. Every keyway in the 6275 line is offered stamped Do Not Duplicate and unstamped, so an LA blank can be ordered either way, same for LB, LC, LE, LF, LG, LJ, LK and LL. Facilities running a key control program usually stamp the tenant and staff keys and leave the shop's own blanks unstamped. It is an option you pick at order time, not something a locksmith adds later.
4) Does one Sargent 6275 blank cover mortise, rim and LFIC cylinders, or do I need different blanks?
One blank. The 6275 cuts for mortise, rim, component and LFIC cylinders in the same Sargent keyway, so a locksmith stocking a single keyway covers the storeroom mortise lock, the rim cylinder on the exit device and the interchangeable cores in the same building. What changes between those cylinders is the housing, not the key section.
5) I manage a building on a Sargent master key system. Can I just buy 6275 blanks and have them cut locally?
Sargent 6275 blanks are sold through controlled distribution with geographical protection, which is the point of the product for a facility running key control. You order the blanks in your assigned keyway and they get cut to your keying schedule, which keeps the master system intact. Order them in the Do Not Duplicate stamped version if you are handing keys out to tenants or staff and want the corner hardware store to turn the job away.
6) Is the Sargent 6275 a finished key or a blank I still have to cut?
It is an uncut blank. The 6275 arrives with the keyway profile and the 6-pin blade but no bitting, so it needs to go to a code machine or a duplicator against a working key before it opens anything. Order it if you have a locksmith or an in-house key shop; if you need keys cut to a code, that is a separate step from buying the blanks.
7) What is the difference between LFIC and SFIC key blanks for Sargent?
Large format interchangeable core, which is what the Sargent 6275 is cut for, uses a full-size figure-eight core that drops into a mortise, rim or knob housing and pulls with a control key. Small format cores are the shorter Best-style figure eight and take an entirely different key section, usually 7-pin. The two are not interchangeable in either direction. If the core you are pulling is the shorter one, the 6275 is the wrong blank and you want an SFIC blank instead.
8) Are Sargent 6275 key blanks suitable for a commercial facility rather than residential?
Commercial, and that is how the 6275 is specified. It is a replacement part for commercial Sargent cylinder systems, the kind installed in office buildings, schools, hospitals, government buildings, multi-tenant residential and warehouses. A single-family house on residential-grade hardware will not be running an LFIC core, so this blank has nothing to fit there.
