Sargent 6285B-4A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Sargent 6285B key blank work in a large format interchangeable core?
No. The 6285B is cut for Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) cylinders only, the figure-eight cores that pull with a control key. Large format interchangeable cores use a different blank entirely, so if the cores in your building are LFIC or a conventional Sargent cylinder, this blank will not enter the keyway.
2) What keyway does the Sargent 6285B SFIC key blank come in?
The 6285B is supplied in the 4A keyway. That has to match the keyway your SFIC cores are pinned to, so pull one of your existing keys and confirm the keyway stamp before you order a batch. A blank in the wrong keyway will not enter the plug no matter how it is cut.
3) Will a 6-pin SFIC master key blank work in a 7-pin core?
No, and this trips people up. SFIC cores are stacked 6-pin or 7-pin, and the 6285B is a 6-pin blank. In a 7-pin system the blank is too short at the tip to lift the seventh chamber. Count the pin chambers in one of your cores or look at the length of your current key before ordering.
4) Can I use the Sargent 6285B blank to cut a change key, or is it master-only?
Physically it is a 6-pin SFIC blank and a machine cuts it to whatever bitting you give it. Sargent catalogues the 6285B as a master key blank, so locksmiths running key control typically reserve it for master and grand master levels and cut change keys on a different blank. That separation is a records habit, not a mechanical limit, but if your system already follows it, keep it.
5) Does the Sargent 6285B come cut or does it need to be bitted?
It ships as a blank. There is no bitting on it, so a locksmith with SFIC code data cuts it to your master bitting on a code machine or duplicates from an existing master. Ordering blanks means you keep the cutting and the key records in house rather than sending bitting information out.
6) I manage several buildings on one Sargent SFIC master system. Can I add keys with the 6285B without rekeying?
Yes, as long as the new keys are cut to bitting already in your system. Adding a blank does not change any core. The 6285B is a replacement key blank, so you are just producing another key at a level the cores are already pinned for. Rekeying only comes into it when you want to void a key that walked off.
7) Does the 6285B work as a control key for pulling SFIC cores?
No. The 6285B is a master key blank. A control key is cut to a separate control shear line and it is what retracts the core lug so the core comes out of the housing. Cutting a master bitting on this blank gives you an operating key, not a core removal key. Order the control key separately for your keyway.
8) Is the Sargent 6285B blank meant for commercial buildings or houses?
Commercial. SFIC master keying is the system used in offices, schools, hospitals, government facilities, multi-tenant residential and warehouses, where one master has to open a hierarchy of doors and cores get swapped rather than rekeyed on site. It is not something you would run on a single-family house.
