1) What is a Sargent construction core actually for, and do I still need to buy permanent cylinders?
A temporary construction core is what goes in the lock while the building is still a job site. The general contractor and the trades carry the construction key, the owner's permanent key system stays out of circulation, and when the job closes out you pull the construction core and drop in the permanent core. It is a temporary part by design, so plan on ordering the permanent cores separately. Because Sargent's cores are interchangeable, that swap is done with a control key at the door, no lock disassembly and no hardware replaced.
2) Do I order the 6-pin or the 7-pin Sargent construction core?
That is decided by the key system already specified on the job, not by preference. The 6-pin core is the 6400 series and it goes with 64-, 1164-, and DG1, 2, 3 systems. The 7-pin core is the 7200 series and it goes with 72-, 11-72-, and 11-7P-7200 systems. Both are offered here, and pin count is a selectable option, so pull the system designation off the hardware schedule or the keying meeting notes and match it. A 6-pin core will not operate in a 7-pin system.
3) Will a Sargent construction core drop into my existing interchangeable core locks?
It fits Sargent interchangeable core housings in the LFIC and SFIC formats, which covers most of the cylindrical locks, mortise locks and exit device trim on a Sargent IC job. The thing to confirm before ordering is which format the openings were built for. LFIC (large format) and SFIC (small format) cores are not interchangeable with each other, so a small format housing takes a small format core and nothing else. If the hardware was furnished as conventional cylinders rather than interchangeable core, there is no core pocket for this to go into at all.
4) What is the difference between KD and KA when I order construction cores, and which do I want on a job site?
Keying is a required selection here: Standard Keying, KD (keyed different), or KA (keyed alike). On a construction site, KA is what most GCs want. Every core takes the same key, so one key on the super's ring opens every temporary opening and you are not sorting a ring of thirty keys at 6am. KD gives each core its own key and is only worth it when the trades need to be compartmented, say a secured storage room or a tenant space that has already been turned over. Standard keying is the default factory setup for the system.
5) What keyway do Sargent 6400 and 7200 construction cores come in?
The HF keyway, in both the 6-pin and the 7-pin core. That matters because the keyway has to match the rest of the Sargent system on the project, including the permanent cores that will replace these. If the job's keying schedule was written around a different Sargent keyway, get that reconciled with whoever is administering the key system before the cores are cut, because a keyway mismatch means the key will not enter the plug at all.
6) What finish do these Sargent construction cores come in, and does the finish matter on a temporary core?
04, satin brass with a clear coat, is the finish on both pin configurations. On a construction core it is close to cosmetic, since the part comes out at turnover and the permanent core sets the look the owner actually sees. Where it does matter: if the punch list runs long and the building is occupied while these are still in the doors, a brass core in a satin chrome lever reads as unfinished to a tenant. That is a scheduling problem, not a hardware one.
7) Is the Sargent construction core meant for commercial jobs or will it work on residential rentals?
It is commercial-grade hardware built around Sargent's conventional key system, and it belongs on commercial and institutional work: schools, hospitals, government buildings, industrial facilities, multi-tenant residential build-outs and renovation work. A property manager with a handful of single-family rentals on residential-grade locks has no interchangeable core housing to put it in, so this is the wrong part for that. Multi-family and mixed-use built with commercial hardware is squarely in range.
8) Can I reuse Sargent construction cores on the next job after the building is turned over?
Yes, and most contractors do. The core is a replacement part that comes out intact when the permanent core goes in, so it can be rekeyed to the next project's construction system and put back to work. Whoever administers the key system, your locksmith or the Sargent distributor holding the records, does the rekeying. Just keep the cores separated from the permanent stock when they come out of the doors, because a construction core that gets boxed with permanent cores is how the wrong core ends up back in a finished opening.
