1) Will the Sargent 05-218X latchbolt fit a 2-3/8 inch backset door, or only 2-3/4?
Both. The 05-218X deadlocking latchbolt is ordered in either a 2-3/8 inch or a 2-3/4 inch backset, so match whichever hole pattern is already drilled in the door. 2-3/4 is the usual commercial backset, 2-3/8 the common residential-width one. Measure from the door edge to the center of the cross bore before you order, because the two are not interchangeable.
2) What is the difference between the guarded and unguarded Sargent 05-218X latchbolt?
Both configurations are offered, and the choice is about the opening. A guarded latchbolt carries an anti-shim guard alongside the bolt, which is what you want on an exterior or otherwise vulnerable door. Unguarded is the plain bolt, used on interior openings where shimming is not a concern. Otherwise the part is the same deadlocking latch with a 1/2 inch throw and a 1-1/8 inch square corner front.
3) Which Sargent locks does the 05-218X latchbolt work with?
It is built for Sargent 6500 Series cylindrical lever locks. It is a replacement latch unit for that line, not a universal bored-lock latch, so if the chassis in your door is a different Sargent series or another brand, this is the wrong part.

5) Does the square corner front on this Sargent latch mean I need to change my door prep?
The 05-218X comes with a 1-1/8 inch square corner front. If the latch you are pulling out has a radius (round corner) faceplate, the mortise pocket in the door edge is rounded and a square plate will leave gaps at the corners unless you square the pocket with a chisel. Matching corner style to the existing prep saves that step.
6) Is this latchbolt handed?
No handing to specify on the 05-218X. You choose backset, finish, and guarded or unguarded, and nothing else. Deadlocking bored-lock latches of this type reverse by rotating the bolt, so one part serves both left and right hand doors.
7) Why replace a worn latch with a deadlocking one instead of a plain spring latch?
Deadlocking is what the 05-218X is. The auxiliary plunger contacts the strike as the door closes and locks the latchbolt against being pushed back, so the door cannot be carded or shimmed open. On commercial openings that is the expected latch type, and it is the right swap for any 6500 Series lock in office, school, healthcare, retail, or multi-tenant use.
8) What finishes can I get to match the rest of my 6500 Series levers?
Four finishes: 03 bright brass clear coated, 10 satin bronze clear coated, 10B dark oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, and 32D satin stainless steel.
