Sargent 8774E 10BE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does fail-secure mean on the Sargent 8774, and what happens to the door if the building loses power?
Fail-secure means the outside trim stays locked when power is removed. On the 8774 the electrified ET lever trim is what the current controls, so a power drop leaves the lever rigid and nobody gets in from the outside without a key or a credential at another point. Egress is unaffected: the pushpad still retracts the top and bottom latches mechanically, so people can always get out. If your access control scheme needs the opposite behavior, unlocked on power loss for a stair re-entry or a fire alarm interface, this is the wrong device and you want a fail-safe version instead.
2) What size Sargent 8774 do I order for a 36 inch door?
Device length is ordered by door width and the 8774 comes in 32, 36, 42 and 48 inch. A 36 inch door takes the 36 inch device. Size the device to the door leaf, not to the opening, and on a pair order one device per leaf. Note that if you want the AL alarmed option, the door has to be at least 36 inches wide.
3) Do I need to specify handing on the Sargent 8774 electrified exit device?
Yes, and it is not optional. The 8774 is ordered RHR or LHR because the electrified ET trim and its wiring are handed. Stand outside the door: if it swings away from you with hinges on the right, that is right hand reverse. Ordering the wrong hand means the lever is on the wrong side of the case and it cannot be flipped in the field. Several non-handed alternatives exist if you are stocking devices for a fleet of openings, the Von Duprin 2227 and the BEST Precision 5201 are both reversible or non-handed.
4) Can the Sargent 8774 go on a fire rated door?
Yes, but you have to order the fire rated version, which is supplied less dogging. Fire doors have to positively latch on every cycle, so no exit device on a labeled opening may have mechanical dogging that holds the latches retracted. The standard version of the 8774 is the one with dogging, and it belongs on non rated openings only. Pick the rating at order time, it is not a field conversion.
5) Do I need a mullion to use the Sargent 8774 on a pair of doors?
No. A surface vertical rod device latches into a strike at the head and into the threshold or floor strike at the bottom, so it secures each leaf independently and a pair of doors can be left free swinging with no center mullion and no astragal in the way. That is the whole reason to choose vertical rod over a rim device, which latches into the frame edge or into a removable mullion. Order one 8774 per leaf and prep the head and sill for both.
6) Is the Sargent 8774 12 volt or 24 volt, and does it matter which I pick?
Both are offered and you choose at order time. Match the 8774 to the power supply already feeding the opening, since the coil is wound for one voltage and running a 12V trim on a 24V supply cooks it. If you are running new power, 24V is the common choice for longer wire runs because voltage drop over the cable hurts less. Whichever you pick, the door needs an electric hinge or a door loop to carry power from the frame to the device.
7) Is the Sargent 8774 exit device Grade 1?
Grade 1, the highest ANSI/BHMA durability class and what a spec for a commercial or institutional opening normally calls for. That is the tier written for high traffic entrances, stairwells and school and hospital corridors. If you are standardizing a facility and a drawing says Grade 1 surface vertical rod, the 8774 meets that line item. Among the alternatives, the Corbin Russwin ED5400, the Falcon 25-V and the Von Duprin 2227 are also Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod devices, while the Dexter ED2000 and the TownSteel TS5100 are Grade 2 and would not satisfy a Grade 1 spec.
8) My aluminum storefront door has a narrow stile. Can I use the Sargent 8774 or do I need something else?
The Sargent 8774 is built as a wide stile device, so a narrow stile door calls for a narrow stile chassis instead. Narrow stile surface vertical rod options include the Von Duprin 3327A grooved case device for 36 inch doors, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch thickness; the Corbin Russwin ED4400, Grade 1 narrow stile at 36 inches, exit only and accepts trim; the Falcon 19-V-EO, Grade 1 narrow stile at 36 inches, exit only; and the Adams Rite 8200 Series, a Grade 1 narrow stile life safety device at 30 inches. The Arrow S1150 is listed for narrow or wide stile and is fire rated, exit only, less trim, for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) What is the closest wide stile surface vertical rod exit device to the Sargent 8774 if I need a fire rated opening?
For a fire rated wide stile surface vertical rod opening, the TownSteel 9700 Series EF9727 is a heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device that is fire rated, sized 36 inches by 84 inches, and compatible with wood doors. The Adams Rite 3100 Series is also fire rated, Grade 1, wide stile, in a 30 inch size for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Sargent 8774 itself is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device offered in a Fire Rated (Less Dogging) build alongside the standard build, so the fire rated requirement can be met within the 8774 by selecting that rating rather than changing brands.
10) I do not need access control on this door. What is the simpler mechanical alternative to the Sargent 8774?
The Sargent 8774 is an electromechanical device, so the electrified function is central to it. When the opening only needs mechanical egress on a wide stile door, the Von Duprin 2227-3FT is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device for 36 inch doors, non-handed, for 1-3/4 inch thickness. The Corbin Russwin ED5400 is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device at 36 inches that is exit only and accepts trim. The Falcon 20 Series is likewise a Grade 1 wide stile 36 inch surface vertical rod device, exit only. These are mechanical devices without the 8774 electric options such as electric dogging or latch retraction.
11) What lever trim comes with the Sargent 8774 and can I order the device without trim?
Eight ET lever designs are offered, A, B, E, F, J, L, P and W, and there is a None option that ships the device alone if you already have trim on the door or are ordering trim separately. The 8774 configuration is electrified trim with no cylinder, so if you want key override on the outside you need to specify a cylinder separately. Pick the lever style to match the levers already on the building's other openings.
12) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the Sargent 8774 if I only need a mechanical exit device with no electrification?
Several Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod devices are stocked as straight mechanical exit only or trim accepting units. The Corbin Russwin ED5400 accepts trim, the Falcon 20-V and 25-V are exit only, and the Von Duprin 7827 comes with hex key dogging. The Falcon 20, 25 and the Von Duprin 2227 all list a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. Going mechanical drops the voltage choice, the handing question on the electric trim and the power transfer through the frame, so it is a much simpler install where you do not need the door on an access control system.
13) Can I hold the doors unlocked during business hours with the Sargent 8774?
Two ways, and which one you can use depends on the rating. On the standard version, mechanical dogging holds the pushpad depressed and the latches retracted so the door pushes open freely. On the fire rated version dogging is not available, so the only way to run a scheduled push-pull is electrically, using option 58 electric dogging or option 56 remote dogging and latch retraction, which lets the access control system release and relatch the device on a time schedule. That electric route works on non rated openings too and is the better answer when you want the front doors to relock automatically at close.
14) I am replacing an existing surface vertical rod device on a wide stile door. Will the Sargent 8774 use the same holes?
Plan on a fresh prep. Surface vertical rod devices are not standardized between manufacturers, so the case mounting pattern, the rod centers and the top and bottom strike locations of a Sargent 8700 will not line up with another brand's device. Sargent to Sargent within the 8700 family is the case where the prep carries over. If matching an existing prep matters more than the brand, measure the current mounting holes and strike positions before ordering anything, and be prepared to add the power transfer for the electrified trim regardless, since a mechanical device you are removing will not have one.
15) Which surface vertical rod exit devices carry the same ANSI Grade 1 rating as the Sargent 8774?
The Sargent 8774 is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1. Wide stile surface vertical rod peers also rated Grade 1 include the Von Duprin 2227-3FT for 36 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ED5400 at 36 inches, the Falcon 25-V-EO wide stile 3 foot device, the TownSteel ED8927 at 36 by 84 inches, and the Adams Rite 8100 Series life safety device at 30 inches. Dexter ED1000 and ED1500 surface vertical rod devices are Grade 1 as well. Devices in the set that sit at Grade 2 rather than Grade 1 are the Dexter ED2000 Series and the TownSteel TS5100 Series, so a facility standardizing on Grade 1 would rule those two out.
16) I need a crossbar style exit device instead of a push rail like the Sargent 8774. What are my options?
The Sargent 8774 is a push rail style surface vertical rod device. For a crossbar look, the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device at 36 inches that accepts operator trim and fits 1-3/4 inch doors. Note that the ED7400 is a narrow stile chassis, so it suits an aluminum storefront stile rather than the wide stile doors the 8774 is built for.
17) What surface vertical rod device should I look at for a wood door opening if the Sargent 8774 does not fit the job?
Among the surface vertical rod peers, the TownSteel devices state wood door compatibility: the EF9727 heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile fire rated device at 36 by 84 inches, the ED8927 Grade 1 wide stile at 36 by 84 inches, and the ED3727 Grade 1 narrow stile at 36 by 84 inches are all listed as wood door compatible. The Von Duprin 7527 and 7827 are Grade 1 devices listed as not wood door compatible, so those two would be set aside for a wood opening.
18) The Sargent 8774 covers 32 to 48 inch doors. What surface vertical rod devices are available for a door under 33 inches?
The Sargent 8774 is offered in 32, 36, 42 and 48 inch sizes. For openings at the small end, the Adams Rite 3100 Series fire rated wide stile device and the Adams Rite 8100 Series life safety wide stile device are both 30 inch Grade 1 surface vertical rod devices, as is the Adams Rite 8200 Series in narrow stile. The Arrow 3700 Series wide stile pushpad and the Arrow S1150 fire rated device are also 30 inch. Design Hardware offers 33 inch devices in the 1000V heavy duty and 2000V standard duty series.
19) Is there a wide stile surface vertical rod exit device that ships non-handed so I do not have to specify hand?
The Sargent 8774 is ordered by handing, either RHR or LHR. If handing needs to be avoided at order time, the Von Duprin 2227-3FT is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device for 36 inch doors that is non-handed, and the Orca OED56 is a 36 inch non-handed device supplied less bottom rod. The BEST Precision 5201 Series is a 36 inch reversible surface vertical rod device.
20) What finishes does the Sargent 8774 exit device come in, and which hold up outdoors?
Twelve finishes: bright and satin brass (03, 04), bright and satin bronze (09, 10), four dark oxidized satin bronze variants (10B oil rubbed, 10BE, 10BL clear coated, 20D dark statuary lacquered), bright and satin stainless (32, 32D), plus black and white suede powder coat (BSP, WSP). For an exterior door or a coastal site, 32D satin stainless is the durable choice and the one most commonly specified for commercial entrances. Powder coat BSP and WSP are for matching a painted storefront. The clear coated brass and bronze finishes are living finishes on a high traffic pushpad and will wear at the touch points.
21) If I am standardizing a facility on one wide stile surface vertical rod device, which alternatives to the Sargent 8774 come in a heavy duty build?
Two peers state a heavy duty designation. The TownSteel 9700 Series EF9727 is heavy duty, Grade 1, wide stile, fire rated and wood door compatible at 36 by 84 inches. The TownSteel TS5100 Series is heavy duty wide stile at 36 by 84 inches at Grade 2 and is not fire rated. The Design Hardware 1000V is a 33 inch heavy duty device. The Sargent 8774 is Grade 1 wide stile and covers 32, 36, 42 and 48 inch openings, which lets one model carry across several door widths in the same facility.
