    1) Will the Sargent 8876 exit device work on a wood door?
    No. The 8876 is a metal-door device; wood door compatibility is not part of its build. If your opening is a wood door, look at a rim device rated for wood construction such as the Adams Rite 3700 Series fire-rated narrow stile rim device or the Adams Rite 8700 Series, both of which are wood door compatible. Putting the 8876 on a wood leaf means the reinforcement and through-bolting the device expects is not there.
    2) Is the Sargent 8876 a wide stile or narrow stile device? Will it fit an aluminum storefront door?
    Wide stile. The 8876 mounts on the broad stile of a hollow metal or full-stile door, and it is the wrong choice for a narrow stile aluminum storefront leaf. For storefront, go to a narrow stile rim device: the Adams Rite 8800 Series, the Corbin Russwin ED4200, the TownSteel ED3700, or the Falcon 19-R are all narrow stile rim devices. Glass front installers should be reading that list, not this one.
    3) What happens to the Sargent 8876 when the power drops?
    It locks. Fail-secure means the outside trim stays locked with no power, so nobody gets in from the corridor side during an outage. Egress is unaffected, the push rail is mechanical and always releases the latch from inside. If your life-safety plan or your local authority requires the outside trim to unlock on power loss, fail-secure is the wrong function and you need a fail-safe device instead.
    4) What voltage does the Sargent 8876 need?
    Order it as 12V or 24V; those are the two power options on the device. Confirm what your access control panel or power supply actually puts out before you specify, because the two are not field-interchangeable. Wiring is concealed, so plan the door loop or power transfer hinge into the frame prep before the leaf goes up.
    5) Does the Sargent 8876 come fire rated, and can I dog it down?
    Both, but not at once. Choose Standard if you want the rail dogged down for daytime free access, or Fire Rated (Less Dogging) for a labeled opening. Fire-rated devices cannot have mechanical dogging, the latch has to positively latch every cycle, so the fire version is supplied less dogging. Pick by the door, not by preference: a labeled leaf gets the fire version.
    6) What length Sargent 8876 do I order for a 36 inch door?
    Device lengths run 32, 36, 42 and 48 inches. Match the device to the door leaf width, so a 3-0 leaf takes the 36 inch device and a 4-0 leaf takes the 48. One thing to watch: if you want the AL alarmed option, the door has to be at least 36 inches wide, so the 32 inch device and an alarm do not go together.
    7) Do I have to specify handing on the Sargent 8876?
    Only if you take lever trim. The device itself is non-handed, but the ET lever trim is handed, so if you select an ET lever you specify RHR or LHR. Stand outside the door, the hinge side tells you: hinges on your right is right hand reverse. Order the device with no trim and handing does not come up at all.
    8) What is the closest equivalent to a Sargent 8876 from Von Duprin?
