Sargent 97-0189 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Sargent 97-0189 thumb piece work on a left hand door?
No. The 97-0189 is a Right Hand Reverse (RHR) thumb piece, meaning it is cut and oriented for an RHR opening only. Handing on a thumb piece is not reversible in the field, so if your door is LH, RH, or LHR you need the thumb piece for that hand instead. Stand outside the door (the pull side): if the hinges are on your right and the door swings toward you, that is RHR.
2) Is the 97-0189 a whole exit device trim or just the thumb piece?
Just the thumb piece. The 97-0189 is the lever-actuated pressure piece that sits in the trim and retracts the latch, sold as a standalone replacement component. The escutcheon, pull, spindle, and the exit device itself are separate parts. If the trim plate is damaged or the device is worn out, ordering this piece alone will not restore operation.
3) I manage a building with Sargent exit devices on several doors. Do I order one 97-0189 for all of them?
Only for the RHR openings. Thumb pieces are handed, so a run of doors in a corridor will usually split between hands depending on which way each leaf swings and where the hinges sit. Walk the doors, note the hand of each, and order the matching thumb piece per opening. All of them will match visually if the existing trim is 26D satin chrome.
4) Is the Sargent 97-0189 a genuine Sargent part or an aftermarket copy?
It is a Sargent-branded replacement component, model 97-0189, made for Sargent exit device trim. Using the factory part matters on exit hardware because a thumb piece that does not sit correctly in the trim can leave the latch partially retracted or fail to actuate at all.
5) What finish does the Sargent 97-0189 thumb piece come in?
One finish only: 26D, satin chromium plated over nickel, commonly written as Satin Chrome. If the rest of your exit device trim is 26D, the replacement thumb piece will match without touch-up. For brass, bronze, or black openings, this part will stand out.
6) Can I use the Sargent 97-0189 on a residential entry door?
It is built as a commercial part for Sargent exit device trim, and exit devices are commercial hardware found on egress doors. On a residential entry with a standard residential lockset there is nothing for it to mount to.
