1) What is a removable mullion for, and do I need one with my Sargent 80 Series rim exit devices on a pair of doors?
A removable mullion is the vertical steel post that stands between a pair of doors so each leaf can carry a rim exit device instead of vertical rods. The Sargent SM980S is that post, made for PE80, 80, 20, 30 and 90 Series devices. If you want rim devices on a pair, you need the mullion, because a rim device latches into it rather than into the other door. If you would rather leave the opening clear with no post in the middle, you go to surface or concealed vertical rod devices on both leaves instead and skip the mullion entirely.
2) Is the Sargent SM980S mullion panic rated and what grade is it?
Panic rated, and built to ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 in steel. That is the combination an institutional spec normally calls for on an egress pair: the mullion has to release and clear the opening under panic conditions, and Grade 1 is the top commercial durability tier for exit hardware.
3) I need a mullion I can take out of the opening for moving equipment through. Which one do I order?

It comes apart. The mullion splits into sections, so it ships and carries in shorter pieces and goes up in a stairwell or corridor where you could not swing a full 96 inch post into place. Once assembled it is still a removable mullion, so it lifts out of the opening when you need the full clear width for moving equipment or freight through.
5) Can the mullion be locked in place so it cannot be pulled out of the opening?
Yes, the SM980S is a lockable removable mullion. It takes a cylinder so an authorized person removes it and nobody else can, which is what you want on a retail back door or a loading area where the post only comes out for deliveries. Removable without a lock means anyone who knows the trick can take your mullion out.
6) What is the difference between the Stanley QRM111 and the QRM311 mullions?
They are two different Stanley Security mullion series carrying the same Grade 1 rating: the QRM111 is part of the QRM100 Series and the QRM311 is part of the QRM300 Series. Because they are separate series, the mounting hardware, brackets and stabilizers are keyed to their own series rather than being interchangeable between the two, so specify the series that matches the exit devices already on the opening. 7) What finish does the Sargent SM980S come in and can it be painted?
Gray prime coat, and that is the only finish it ships in. Prime coat is a paint base, not a final finish, so plan on the painter topcoating it to match the frame. If a building standard calls for a factory architectural finish on the mullion, prime coat is not that.
