Satco Lighting S11271 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S11271 MR16 LED use a GU10 base or a pin base like an old low-voltage MR16?
It's a GU10 twist-lock bi-pin base running on 120V line voltage, not the 12V GU5.3 pin base used on older low-voltage MR16 lamps. If your fixture has a magnetic or electronic 12V transformer, this lamp will not work in it. It draws 0.046A at 60Hz.
2) Can I sell or install the Satco S11271 in California?
No. The S11271 is flagged non-compliant for California Title 20, so it can't be sold into California. Satco lists the S11278 as the Title 20 alternate substitute for that market.
3) What does the Starfish IOT feature on this Satco MR16 actually do?
It's a smart lamp with the radio built in, so color and white tuning happen at the bulb, no hub or separate driver. It's tunable white across 2700K to 5000K plus RGBW color, and it dims. Wattage is 5.5W producing 400 lumens, a 50W incandescent equivalent.
4) Can I use this Satco MR16 LED in a bathroom or a covered exterior soffit?
Damp location rated and listed for indoor use, so a bathroom, covered porch ceiling or a soffit that stays dry is fine. Anywhere it takes direct rain or spray needs a wet-rated lamp instead. Burning position is universal, so you can aim it up, down or sideways.
5) Do I need a special dimmer for the Satco S11271 smart MR16?
The lamp dims, but as a Starfish smart lamp the dimming is done through the app or smart control, so it wants constant power at the socket. If you leave a wall dimmer in the circuit and it's on anything less than full, you can get flicker or dropped commands. Standard practice with these is a plain on/off switch and app control.
6) Is a 50 degree beam right for retail accent lighting, or do I need a tighter spot?
At 50 degrees this is a flood beam. It washes a wall or covers a seating area evenly, but it won't punch a tight pool of light onto a single piece of merchandise. For accent work on a specific object you want a narrow flood or spot in the 25 degree range. Output is 400 lumens with 80 CRI.
7) Can I specify this Satco MR16 on a DLC rebate project?
No. The S11271 is not DLC listed, so it won't qualify for utility rebate programs that require DesignLights Consortium approval. It is FCC compliant, which is the relevant clearance for the wireless radio in a smart lamp.
8) Will 80 CRI be good enough for a hotel lobby or gallery?
80 CRI is the general-purpose commercial number, fine for lobbies, corridors, offices and most hospitality. For art, retail apparel, or anywhere color judgement matters, spec 90+ CRI instead. The tunable 2700K to 5000K range does let you match warm lobby light to cooler back-of-house on the same lamp type.
9) How long do these last compared to the halogen MR16s I'm pulling out?
Rated 25,000 hours. Against a 50W halogen MR16, which it replaces at 5.5W, that's a large reduction in relamping trips on high ceilings and track runs. Housing is aluminum and plastic with a clear plastic (PS) lens, in white.
10) Will this work in a three-way lamp socket?
No. The S11271 isn't a three-way lamp, and it's a GU10 twist-lock base anyway, so it won't go into a three-way medium base socket. Level control on this one is handled by the Starfish smart dimming, not by a socket switch.
