Satco Lighting S11972 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Satco S11972 U-bend LED be installed in an existing fixture without rewiring, or does the ballast have to come out?
Both ways work. The S11972 is a Type A/B lamp: it will run on an existing fluorescent ballast (Type A) or on line voltage with the ballast bypassed (Type B). Bypass wiring can be single-ended or double-ended. Running it on the ballast lets you do a lamp-only swap now and convert to direct wire later when the ballast fails.
2) What length U-bend troffer does the Satco S11972 fit?
The lamp measures 22.5 inches long, which is the standard U-bend size for a nominal 2x2 troffer or wraparound that originally took 2-foot U-shaped T8 fluorescents. It uses a medium bi-pin base, the same base as a standard T8, so it drops into existing T8 lampholders.
3) Does the Satco S11972 work on both 120V and 277V circuits?
Yes. It is rated 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp handles a 120V office circuit and a 277V commercial lighting circuit when wired as a Type B bypass. Current draw is .12A on bypass and .15A when running through an electronic ballast.
4) Is the 4000K color on this Satco U-bend going to match the other bulbs in my building?
The S11972 is fixed at 4000K neutral white with 83 CRI, and it is not CCT selectable, so you cannot field-adjust it to 3500K or 5000K. If your other fixtures are already 4000K it will blend; if they are 3500K or 5000K you will see the difference, so standardize on one temperature across a space.
5) Can I use this U-bend LED in an enclosed or damp location like a covered walkway or a gasketed fixture?
Yes on both counts. The S11972 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it is approved for sealed or lensed fixtures where heat builds up, and it carries a damp location rating. Damp covers covered exterior areas and bathrooms, not direct water exposure, so it is not a wet location lamp.
6) Is the Satco S11972 glass or plastic? I need something that won't shatter over a food prep area.
It is a plastic lamp, not glass. The lens is polystyrene with a frost finish, the base is plastic, and the housing is white. Each lamp weighs 0.77 lb. The frosted lens diffuses the diodes so you do not see individual hot spots through an open troffer.
7) Does it matter which way the U-bend lamp is oriented in the fixture?
No. Burning position is universal, so the lamp can be installed base up, base down, or horizontal in a troffer without affecting rated life. Rated life is 50,000 hours.
