Satco Lighting S21255 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Satco S21255 G40 LED globe bulb be used in an outdoor fixture or a wet location?
Wet location rated, and listed for both indoor and outdoor use, so the S21255 G40 globe holds up in an exposed porch fixture, a covered patio string, or an open-bottom exterior lantern where rain can reach the lamp. It's also enclosed rated, which means it can go in a sealed jelly jar or a closed globe fixture without the trapped heat shortening its life. Between those two, it covers most exterior and bath fixtures a property manager deals with.
2) Is the Satco S21255 G40 LED dimmable, and will it work on my existing dimmer?
The S21255 is dimmable on 120V line voltage. It is not a three-way lamp, so if the fixture is on a three-way socket with a 50/100/150 style switch, this bulb will only give you one level. For dimming, it needs an LED-rated dimmer; older incandescent-only rotary and slide dimmers were built for a much heavier load than the 0.050A this lamp draws and often produce flicker or a dead zone at the low end.
3) What's the difference between a white G40 globe bulb and a clear filament one?
Both are the same 5 inch diameter globe envelope; the difference is what you see when it's lit. The white finish on the S21255 diffuses the LED filament behind the glass, so you get an even glowing ball with no visible hot spots and no glare when the lamp sits at eye level, which is the usual case over a bathroom mirror or in an open pendant. A clear filament G40 shows the filament strands as a decorative element and is the choice where the bulb itself is meant to be the visual. If the fixture is open and people look straight at it while seated, the white version is the comfortable one.
4) Does the 90 CRI on this Satco globe bulb actually matter for a hotel bathroom or retail space?
It does where people judge color. At 90 CRI the S21255 renders skin tones and fabric close to what they look like under incandescent, which is why 90-plus is what gets specified over hotel and multi-family vanities, in fitting rooms, and in retail display. A standard 80 CRI LED will make makeup and merchandise read flat or slightly off. Paired with the 2700K warm tone, the light reads like the incandescent globes guests are used to seeing in those fixtures.
5) Can I install this G40 LED bulb base-up in a ceiling fixture, or does it have to hang down?
Any orientation. Burning position on the S21255 is universal, so base-up in a flush ceiling mount, base-down in a pendant or a chandelier, or horizontal in a sconce all work without derating the lamp. The 320 degree beam spread means it throws light nearly all the way around the envelope rather than firing in one direction, so a horizontal mount doesn't leave you with a dark side.
6) Does the Satco S21255 meet California Title 24 for a lighting retrofit?
Title 24 compliant, so the S21255 can be used where a California project requires compliant lighting. It is also FCC compliant, which covers the radio interference side that comes up on the electronic driver in any LED lamp. Note it is not DLC listed, so if a utility rebate program you're filing under requires DLC qualification, this lamp won't satisfy that particular requirement.
7) Will these G40 globes hold up in an outdoor string light run in a courtyard?
Yes, provided the sockets are medium base and the string is on 120V. The S21255 is wet rated and outdoor listed, so weather exposure is fine, and at 0.050A per lamp you can run a long string without tripping the circuit. The white diffused envelope cuts the glare you get looking across a strung run at night, and 2700K keeps the warm patio tone rather than the cool cast a 4000K lamp would give.
8) How long before I have to send a tech back up the ladder to change these?
Rated 15,000 hours. On a common-area fixture running 12 hours a day that's a little over three years before relamping; on a lobby or exterior circuit burning all 24 hours it works out to roughly 20 months. That's the number to plan a relamp cycle around on high-ladder or lift-access fixtures where the labor costs more than the lamp.
9) What is the Satco S21255 made of, and is the glass part or all of it?
Glass envelope on a nickel plated aluminum base. The aluminum in the base doubles as the heat path for the driver, and the nickel plating resists the corrosion that eats plain brass-look bases in damp exterior sockets, which matters given this lamp is rated for wet locations. Handle it like any glass lamp on install, it isn't a plastic-envelope LED.
10) Can I order the Satco S21255 in a cooler color temperature like 3000K or 4000K?
The S21255 is a fixed 2700K lamp, not a CCT selectable one, so there's no switch on the base to shift the color. If you're standardizing a building on a single warm tone, that's an advantage, every lamp out of the carton reads the same and a maintenance tech can't set one wrong. If you need a cooler tone for a given space, that's a different Satco part number, not a setting on this one.
