The S21404 is a Type A, ballast dependent lamp. It runs off the existing fluorescent ballast in the fixture, so it drops into a working CFL fixture with no rewiring. That also means the ballast has to be alive and compatible; if the ballast is failing, this lamp fails with it. For fixtures where the ballast is being pulled out entirely, a ballast bypass (Type B) PL lamp is the one to order instead.

Yes, it's specified for vertical operation. In practice that means recessed cans, vertical downlights, and sconces where the lamp points down or up along its axis. If the fixture holds the lamp on its side, a horizontal-rated PL lamp is the correct part, not this one.

At 16 watts and 1750 lumens, the S21404 covers the light output range of the larger quad-tube CFLs typically found in commercial downlights and stairwell fixtures. Match on lumens rather than watts: if the fixture's existing lamp is putting out roughly 1700 to 1800 lumens, this is a like-for-like swap, and it draws 16 watts doing it.

3000K is warm white, and it's the closest match to the soft-white CFLs common in hospitality corridors, lobbies, and multi-family common areas. If the rest of the building is already running 3000K, the S21404 will blend without a visible color break between fixtures. Buildings standardized on 3500K or 4000K neutral light will show a difference, so a property standardizing a floor at a time should keep the color temperature consistent across each run of fixtures.

Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a stairwell or corridor fixture burning 24/7, that's roughly 5.7 years of continuous run time; on a 12-hour daily schedule it's over 11 years. For an MRO group re-lamping a whole building, that's the argument for doing the whole floor at once rather than spot-replacing CFLs as they fail.

Frost. The diffused lens spreads the output across the LED array instead of leaving visible diodes, which matters in open downlights and any fixture where the lamp is in the sightline. Ordering the S21404 gets the frost finish.
