Satco Lighting S28932 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to remove the existing ballast to install the Satco S28932 80W LED corncob lamp?
Yes. The S28932 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired directly to the socket. It runs on 100-277V at 50/60Hz, so it works on 120V, 208V, 240V or 277V branch circuits without any driver in the fixture. If you leave the ballast in the circuit, the lamp will not operate correctly.
2) What HID wattage does the 80W Satco S28932 replace in a parking lot shoebox fixture?
It is rated as a 400W incandescent equivalent and puts out 10,400 lumens at 80 watts, which is the typical retrofit target for 400W metal halide or high pressure sodium shoebox heads. Output on an HID lamp drops over its life, so a like-for-like lumen comparison against a lamp that has been in service for a few years will favor the LED further.
3) Can this LED corncob lamp be used outdoors in a wall pack or area light?
It is rated for outdoor use in damp locations, so an enclosed wall pack, shoebox head or canopy fixture is fine. Damp rated means protected from direct water exposure, not submersion or direct rain on the lamp itself, so the fixture housing and gasket have to do that work. It is also an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed luminaires are acceptable.
4) Does the Satco S28932 have to be mounted base up or base down?
Burning position is universal, so it can be installed base up, base down or horizontal. That matters on shoebox and post top heads where the socket points down and on wall packs where it sits sideways. No orientation restriction applies.
5) Is 5000K the right color for a parking lot retrofit, and will it match my other fixtures?
The lamp is a fixed 5000K daylight white with an 83 CRI. It is not CCT selectable, so there is no switch to dial it to 4000K or 3000K. 5000K is the common choice for parking lots and exteriors where existing metal halide is being replaced, but if the rest of the property is on 4000K it will read noticeably cooler and bluer next to them.
6) Does this Satco corncob lamp qualify for a utility rebate?
It is DLC approved, which is what most utility prescriptive rebate programs require for an LED HID replacement lamp. It is also FCC compliant. Your utility will want the model number S28932 on the application to match its qualified products listing.
7) How much current does the S28932 draw, and how many can I put on one circuit?
Draw runs 0.800A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.289A at 277V, since the 80W load stays constant while voltage rises. On a 20A 277V circuit that is roughly 0.289A per lamp before derating for continuous load, which is why these retrofits often let a property put far more heads on an existing branch than the 400W HID gear did. Size the circuit to your local code and inrush allowance.
8) How long will these last before maintenance crews have to go back up the pole?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. On a dusk to dawn photocell schedule of roughly 4,200 hours a year, that is about 11 to 12 years of service, against the 1 to 3 year relamp cycle typical of HID in the same head. For a property manager the labor and lift rental saved on relamping is usually the bigger number than the energy.
9) What is the Satco S28932 lamp made of, and will it handle the heat inside a sealed fixture?
The base and body are aluminum and plastic, with a white polystyrene lens over the LEDs. The aluminum acts as the heat sink, and the lamp carries an enclosed fixture rating, so it is approved to run inside a sealed luminaire where trapped heat would shorten the life of a lamp not rated for it. Housing and lens are both white.
10) Can I put the S28932 on a dimmer or a three-way circuit?
No. The lamp is not three-way, and as a ballast bypass corncob it is built to run at full output on line voltage. Use it on a straight switched or photocell controlled circuit. If your site needs dimming or step control, that has to come from a fixture-level LED driver rather than a retrofit lamp.
