Satco Lighting S39914 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I put the Satco S39914 T8 LED tube straight into my existing fluorescent fixture without rewiring?
No. The S39914 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. It accepts either single-ended or double-ended wiring, which gives you some flexibility on how the fixture is re-landed, but it will not operate on an existing electronic or magnetic ballast. If you need a drop-in lamp that runs on the existing ballast, you want a Type A tube instead.
2) Can this Satco T8 LED tube be used in a damp location like a covered walkway or parking deck?
It carries a damp location rating and is listed for indoor and outdoor use, so covered walkways, parking decks and unconditioned storage are fine as long as the fixture itself keeps direct water off the lamp. Damp rated is not wet rated, so do not use it where it will be exposed to driving rain or hose-down. Burning position is universal, so it can be mounted horizontally or vertically.
3) What voltage can the 4ft Satco S39914 LED tube be wired to?
It runs on any line voltage from 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential circuits and on 277V commercial lighting branch circuits. Current draw is 0.117A at the low end of the range down to 0.051A at the high end.
4) How much light does a 14W T8 LED tube put out compared to the fluorescent it replaces?
1700 lumens from 14 watts, with a 210 degree beam spread so the output washes down and out of the fixture rather than firing in a narrow line. Satco rates it against a 75W incandescent equivalent. For a parking garage or warehouse where you were running higher-output fluorescents, check your footcandle target before swapping one for one.
5) Can I dim the Satco S39914 or use it on a three-way switch?
No. The S39914 is not a three-way lamp, and as a ballast bypass tube it is wired to line voltage through a standard switched circuit. Put it on straight on/off control. For dimming in a linear application you need a lamp or fixture specified as dimmable with a matched driver.
6) Is this T8 LED tube glass or plastic, and does that matter for my facility?
Both the lens and the base are glass, with a gloss white lens finish and white housing. Glass tubes handle heat well and look like the fluorescent they replace, but in a gym, school corridor, food area or anywhere with impact risk a plastic or coated tube is the safer specification.
7) How long will these 4ft LED tubes last before maintenance has to go back up the ladder?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. On a 12 hour per day schedule that is over eleven years of service, which is the main reason facilities convert T8 fluorescent to LED even with the labor of pulling the ballast out.
