Yes. The S8637 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can be installed in a closed fixture or sealed recessed housing where heat builds up. It carries a Damp location rating, which covers covered porches, bathrooms and coolers, but not direct exposure to rain or spray.

The S8637 is 3500K, a neutral white that sits between warm 3000K residential-style light and 4000K cool white. It will not match 2700K or 3000K lamps in the same room, so if you are relamping a space piecemeal, check the color temperature printed on the lamps you are keeping. The color temperature is fixed, not field selectable.

It is rated as a 75W incandescent/halogen equivalent while drawing 8W and 0.667A on the 12V side. Output is 490 lumens concentrated in a 15 degree beam, so on the narrow spot it reads as bright as the halogen it replaces even though the total lumen number is lower than a wide flood.

15 degrees is a tight spot. Use it where you want a defined pool of light on artwork, a display case, retail merchandise, or a bar back, typically on higher ceilings. For general room fill or evenly washing a wall across a run of recessed cans, a wider flood beam is the better pick, since spots spaced for general lighting leave scallops and dark gaps between them.

The lamp is dimmable. On a 12V system the dimming behavior depends on the transformer as much as the lamp, so a magnetic or electronic low-voltage transformer matched to a low-wattage LED load and an LED-compatible dimmer is what gives smooth control. Old halogen dimmers set up for a 75W load often have a minimum load above what a single 8W lamp draws.

CRI is 90 plus, which is the range specified for retail merchandise, artwork, food display and hospitality where color accuracy matters. Paired with the 15 degree spot beam, that is the combination used for accent and display lighting rather than general area light.

The S8637 is California T24 listed. It is not DLC approved and it is not BAA compliant, so if your project specification requires DLC listing for a utility rebate or Buy American Act compliance for a federal job, this lamp will not satisfy it.

Each S8637 draws 8W at 0.667A on the 12 volt secondary. Divide your transformer's rated VA by 8 to get the lamp count, then leave headroom rather than loading it to the limit. Also confirm the transformer's minimum load, because electronic low-voltage transformers sized for halogen often will not start reliably on one or two 8W LEDs.

Burning position is universal, so the S8637 can be installed base up, base down, or aimed horizontally in track heads and adjustable recessed trims without affecting rated life.

Rated average life is 25,000 hours. For a facility running display lighting 12 hours a day that is roughly five to six years between relamps, which is the main reason maintenance departments move MR16 track and display fixtures off halogen.

It is lensed with a clear lens over the light source, and the housing is gray. The clear lens keeps the beam crisp for the 15 degree spot distribution and keeps dust off the emitters in open track heads.
