Satco Lighting S8893 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Satco S8893 T8 LED tube run on my existing fluorescent ballast, or do I have to rewire the fixture?
Both ways work. The S8893 is a Type A/B lamp: it will operate on a compatible existing fluorescent ballast (Type A, plug and play) or on line voltage with the ballast removed and the sockets wired direct (Type B, ballast bypass). Bypass wiring can be single ended or double ended, so it suits most retrofit fixtures without changing the lampholders.
2) What voltage can this 13W T8 LED tube be wired to in bypass mode?
It takes 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential circuits and on 277V commercial lighting branch circuits. Current draw runs 0.108A down to 0.047A across that voltage range, which is what you use for circuit loading when you are relamping a whole floor.
3) Can I use this LED tube in an enclosed fixture or a damp location like a parking garage or covered walkway?
Yes on both counts. The lamp is enclosed rated, so a gasketed or lensed fixture will not cook it, and it carries a damp location rating for covered exterior areas, garages and locker rooms. Damp is not wet, so avoid locations with direct water exposure. Burning position is universal, meaning it can be mounted horizontal, vertical or any angle.
4) Is 5000K the right color for a warehouse or shop, and will it match the tubes already in the building?
5000K is a daylight-white tone, the usual pick for warehouses, shops, garages and back-of-house where you want crisp, cool light. Color rendering is 83 CRI. The color temperature is fixed, not field selectable, so if the other fixtures in the building are 3500K or 4000K this lamp will read noticeably cooler beside them. Standardize a whole room at a time.
5) How long does this 13 watt T8 LED last compared to the fluorescent tube I'm replacing?
Rated 50,000 hours average life. On a 12 hour a day schedule that is roughly 11 years of service, which is the main reason MRO and property maintenance crews move off fluorescent T8 relamping cycles. Draw is 13 watts, with a 50W incandescent equivalence stated for output comparison.
6) Does this tube spread light wide enough for an open office troffer, or is it a narrow beam?
Beam spread is 180 degrees with a frosted lens, so light distributes across the full half-sphere below the tube the way a fluorescent does. That makes it suitable for troffers, wraps and strip fixtures where you want even ceiling-to-floor coverage rather than a directional beam.
