Satco Lighting S9283 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Satco S9283 MR11 LED work on a standard 120V line voltage track head?
No. The S9283 is a 12 volt AC/DC lamp and needs a low voltage transformer or driver ahead of it. Put it on 120V line voltage and you will destroy it. If your fixture is line voltage, you need a 120V lamp instead, not this one.
2) Can I put this Satco MR11 LED on a dimmer?
No. The S9283 is non-dimmable. On a dimming circuit expect flicker, buzz, or no start at all, and shortened lamp life. For dimmed display or accent runs you need a lamp specified as dimmable.
3) Will a low voltage transformer still drive these LED lamps properly after I relamp from halogen?
Each S9283 draws 0.250A at 12V, about 3W. Magnetic and electronic transformers often have a minimum load, so a multi-head fixture that had halogen MR11s may drop below the transformer's minimum once every lamp is 3W, and you get flicker or dropout. Total up the lamp wattage on each transformer and compare it to the transformer's stated minimum load before you swap the whole run.
4) Will 5000K match the other MR11s already in my building?
At 5000K this lamp reads as a cool daylight white, noticeably bluer than the 2700K to 3000K warm white most halogen MR11s produce. Mixing the two in the same room or the same track will be obvious. If you are relamping a fixture a few heads at a time, do the whole run at once or stay with the color temperature already installed. The color temperature is fixed, not selectable.
5) What incandescent MR11 does this 3W LED replace?
It is rated as a 20W incandescent/halogen equivalent, drawing 3W and putting out 210 lumens. On a 12V low voltage system that also cuts the load on your transformer considerably, so a transformer sized for halogen will be running well under capacity when you relamp.
6) Can this MR11 go in a fully enclosed fixture?
Yes, it's an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed or covered fixtures are fine. It is also rated for damp locations, which covers a covered porch or a bathroom, but not direct wet exposure. It carries an indoor location designation.
7) Is a 25 degree beam right for accent lighting, or should I look at a wider flood?
Twenty-five degrees is a narrow flood: tight enough to put a defined pool of light on artwork, a display case, or a retail shelf without spilling onto the wall around it. For general fill or washing a whole surface evenly you want a wider beam. Light output is 210 lumens at 5000K, a crisp daylight white, with 80 CRI.
8) Can these be installed base-up or pointed straight down?
Burning position is universal, so the S9283 can be aimed in any orientation, base up, base down, or horizontal, with no effect on rated life. Rated life is 25,000 average hours.
9) Is this Satco MR11 DLC listed for a utility rebate?
It is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and is marked lawful for sale in California.
10) Does the S9283 have a clear lens or a frosted one, and what does the lamp body look like?
Clear lens over the LED, with a white housing. A clear lens holds the 25 degree beam tight and defined rather than diffusing it, which is what you want for accent and display work. The lamp is lensed rather than open reflector.
