Schaub 131-N – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What screw size does the Schaub 131 Artifex cabinet knob take, and will it work with my existing cabinet screws?
The Artifex 131 knob is tapped M4, which is the standard metric machine screw used on most cabinet knobs. If your doors and drawer fronts are already drilled for M4 knob screws, the hole spacing and thread match. Note that older US-made hardware is often 8-32; an 8-32 screw will not thread into an M4 knob, so reuse the M4 screws or order new ones with the knob.
2) How far does the Schaub Artifex round knob stick out from the cabinet face?
Projection is 1-3/8 inches from the mounting surface. With a 1-1/2 inch knob head and a 5/8 inch base where it meets the door, you get real finger clearance behind the knob, which matters on inset doors, tight galley runs, and anywhere a drawer bank sits next to a wall or appliance.
3) What finishes does the Schaub 131 Artifex knob come in?
Two: Dark Pewter (DP) and Natural (N). Both are over Britannium, a pewter-family base metal, so the Natural reads as a warm untreated pewter tone and the Dark Pewter as a deeper aged version. If you are matching across a kitchen, order all knobs and pulls from the same run so the hand-applied tones line up.
4) Is a 1-1/2 inch knob too big for kitchen doors, or should I use it only on drawers?
1-1/2 inch across is on the larger side for a knob and gives a full-hand grip, which is why it works on heavy drawer fronts as well as doors. On narrow stile doors or small vanity drawers it can look oversized. Standard practice is one knob per door and one or two per drawer depending on width.
5) I need a rustic-looking cabinet knob but the Schaub Artifex round shape is too plain for the job. What else should I look at?
The Schaub 131 Artifex is a round knob in a Rustic style. If you want a more patterned or period face rather than a plain round dome, the Emtek Art Deco Cabinet Knob in the Schaub Collection and the Emtek Allerton Cabinet Knob in the Schaub Collection are both cabinet knob/pull designs from the same Schaub-affiliated line, and the Orca Hardware CK-18032 Mission Round Cabinet Knob from the 18-Mission Collection keeps a round outline with Mission-style detailing.
6) Can I mix Emtek Schaub Collection knobs with the Schaub 131 Artifex on the same kitchen?
They are different designs and should be treated as separate looks rather than a match. The Schaub 131 Artifex belongs to the Artifex collection in a Rustic style, while the Emtek 8665 Select, Allerton, Art Deco and Astoria Glass knobs are each their own series within the Emtek Schaub Collection, and the Astoria is a glass knob. If you are standardizing a kitchen or a multi-unit turn package, pick one series and carry it through; use the others only where you intend a deliberate accent.
7) What is Britannium and how does it hold up compared to a solid brass cabinet knob?
Britannium is a pewter-type white metal alloy, and it is what the Artifex 131 is made from. It takes a soft, slightly irregular surface that suits the rustic look of the collection. If you want a heavier solid brass knob instead, the Deltana KRB175 round knob with groove is solid brass and 1-3/4 inches in diameter, and Delaney also offers a solid brass cabinet knob.
8) I want a glass knob instead of the metal Schaub Artifex. What is the option?
The Emtek Astoria Glass Cabinet Knob in the Schaub Collection is the glass-bodied alternative; it is catalogued as a cabinet knob/pull in the Astoria series. The Schaub 131 Artifex is a Britannium knob with a 5/8 inch base dimension, so the transition at the cabinet face will look different between the two.
