Schlage 03-237 ATH 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage 03-237 a complete lockset, or just the lever?
You are ordering trim, not a lock. The 03-237 is an ND Series replacement lever built to take a Medeco large format interchangeable core (LFIC), so the lock chassis, the latch and the core itself are separate items. It is the part you buy when the ND lock is already hung in the door and you need to replace a damaged lever, change the lever design, or move that opening onto Medeco keying.
2) Our building is keyed on Medeco interchangeable cores. Will the Schlage ND 03-237 lever take the cores we already use?
That is exactly what the 03-237 is for. Schlage builds this ND lever around a Medeco large format interchangeable core, so an opening fitted with it joins the Medeco key system you already run instead of becoming a second system your maintenance staff has to carry keys for. For a facility standardizing keying across a campus or a portfolio, that is the reason to specify this lever over a standard ND conventional cylinder lever.
3) Do I have to specify left or right hand when ordering a Schlage ND Series 03-237 lever?
Not for the lever. It is non-handed and all ND levers are reversible, so one part covers left and right hand openings and you will not get the wrong one. Hand still belongs on the order for the job as a whole: Schlage needs it on keyed functions so the cylinder sits in the correct orientation, and on reverse bevel doors so the latchbolt and strike finish come out right. Since this lever runs a keyed core, get the hand right on the paperwork even though the lever itself does not care.
4) I need a replacement Schlage ND lever to match the levers already on my other doors. What lever designs are offered?
Four ND designs: Rhodes (RHO), Sparta (SPA), Tubular (TLR) and Athens (ATH). Look at what is on the doors you are matching, order the same design code and the same finish, and the replacement disappears into the set. All four designs are offered in all ten finishes, so you never have to trade the right lever shape against the right finish to get a match.
5) What finishes does the Schlage ND Series Medeco LFIC lever come in, and which one should I order to match standard commercial hardware?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. If nothing on the drawing says otherwise, 626 satin chrome is the finish most commercial and institutional openings are already running, and it is the safe match. 626AM is the antimicrobial version of that same satin chrome, which is what healthcare, education and food service facilities usually call for on touched hardware. 613 oil rubbed bronze and 643E aged bronze are the ones to reach for on hospitality and residential conversion work where the hardware is meant to be seen.
6) Does the Schlage 03-237 lever meet ADA requirements for an accessible opening?
Schlage states these ND levers comply with ANSI A117.1 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Lever trim is what puts an opening on an accessible route in the first place, because it operates without tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist the way a knob does. For a facility replacing knobs to close out an accessibility item, the 03-237 does that job and keeps the door on Medeco keying at the same time.
7) Is the Schlage ND 03-237 lever a commercial part or can I use it in an apartment or house?
Commercial is what it is built and listed for. Nothing stops you hanging it on a residential door, but you are buying commercial-duty ND trim prepped for a Medeco interchangeable core, and a single house has no use for either. Where it does make sense on residential property is multi-family: a landlord or property manager running one keying system across a building gets master keying and fast rekeying at turnover out of the same core platform.
8) Can I use the Schlage 03-237 on a passage or privacy door that is not keyed?
No. This lever is prepped to carry a Medeco large format interchangeable core, so it belongs on keyed openings only. For passage, privacy or the non keyed side of an opening, order the ND lever built for that function in the same design and finish, Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular or Athens, and the corridor still reads as one consistent set of hardware.
9) I need a complete keyed unit for the door, not just a replacement lever. Is the Schlage 03-237 the wrong part for me?
Wrong part, if there is no ND lock in the door already. The 03-237 replaces the lever on an ND Series lock that is installed and working. When the opening needs a whole unit instead, decide the function first: ZenSupply carries the Cal-Royal CALDOR238, a CAL101 dormitory dead latch, if a dormitory function fits how that door has to behave. Sort out how the door needs to lock, then come back to trim design and finish.
10) Will a Cal-Royal CALDOR238 dormitory dead latch work as a replacement for a Schlage 03-237 Medeco LFIC lever?
No - the two parts sit in different places on the opening. The Schlage 03-237 is a Medeco LFIC lever, the lever trim for ND Series openings, carrying a lock function of Lever Only, and it is sold as a replacement part in lever styles including RHO Rhodes, SPA Sparta, TLR Tubular and ATH Athens. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 is the CAL101 dormitory dead latch, a latching device with a product function of Dormitory. If the lever on an ND Series door is bent, worn or being changed to a different lever style, the 03-237 is the part that comes off and goes back on; the dead latch is what handles the latching side of a dormitory opening, so one does not stand in for the other.
11) The opening is spec'd for a dormitory function - does the Schlage 03-237 cover that or is a different part needed?
A dormitory function is set by the latching device, and in that role the Cal-Royal CALDOR238 CAL101 dead latch is the part that carries a product function of Dormitory. The Schlage 03-237 Medeco LFIC lever carries a lock function of Lever Only: it is the ND Series lever trim, non-handed, with all ND levers reversible and hand information needed only to orient the cylinder on keyed functions and to set latchbolt and strike finish on reverse bevel doors. So a drawing calling for a dormitory function is answered by the CALDOR238, while the 03-237 is what gets ordered when the ND lever itself is being replaced or the lever style and finish are being changed on an existing commercial opening.
