Schlage 12-628-626 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does drive-in mean on the Schlage 12-628 faceplate, and how is it different from a regular latch faceplate?
Drive-in means the round collar presses into the bored hole in the door edge instead of sitting in a routed pocket. The Schlage 12-628 is a circular drive-in faceplate and collar, so it seats flush around the latch with no faceplate screws through the edge of the door. A conventional faceplate has square or radius corners, drops into a rectangular mortise cut into the edge, and fastens with a screw at each end. Two different door preps, so they are not swappable on a door that is already cut.
2) My door edge is already mortised for a square corner faceplate. Will the Schlage 12-628 work?
No. The 12-628 is a circular drive-in unit and it only covers a plain round bore in the edge. Once that edge has been routed for a square or radius corner faceplate, the pocket is wider and longer than the round collar and the collar will not hide it. That opening needs a faceplate cut to the corner type already in the door, square or radius, in the finish you are matching.
3) How do I tell whether my doors need a drive-in collar or a screw-on faceplate before I order?
Pull the latch and look at the door edge. A drive-in prep is nothing but a round hole, no rectangular pocket and no screw holes above and below it, and that is the prep the 12-628 fits. If you see a routed rectangle with a screw hole at each end, that door takes a screw-on faceplate instead. Buildings that have been worked on over the years usually have both, so check the openings individually rather than ordering one type for the whole run.
4) Does the Schlage 12-628 include the latch, or is it just the trim?
Faceplate and collar only. It is a replacement part for the visible trim at the door edge, so if the latchbolt is sticking or the latch case itself has failed, this will not fix it. Order it when the faceplate is scratched, bent, missing after a door swap, or in the wrong finish for the rest of the opening.
5) Will a 626 satin chrome faceplate match the satin chrome levers and strikes on my other doors?
The 12-628 comes in 626, the standard BHMA code for satin chromium plated, so it is the same finish designation used on 626 levers, cylinders and strikes from any manufacturer. Plating can read very slightly warmer or cooler between brands and with age, so on a door where the faceplate sits right beside older trim, expect a close match rather than an invisible one.
