Schlage 20-001 S123 112 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I'm replacing the cylinder in a Schlage mortise lock. Will the 20-001 drive the lock, or do I have to swap the cam?
The 20-001 comes with the straight cam, cam number L583-476, which is what a Schlage mortise lock case is driven by. If the lock you're servicing calls for something different, the cylinder body doesn't change. The cam, tailpiece and rear housing all come off and swap, and the same body then serves mortise, rim or key-in-lever and key-in-knob applications. That's the whole idea of the modular design: one body on the truck instead of three.
2) The lock is fine but the keys are gone on one door. Can I just replace the mortise cylinder?
That's exactly what this part is for. The Schlage 20-001 is a replacement mortise cylinder, not a whole lock, so a lost-key or rekey situation on a single opening is a cylinder swap: back the old one out of the mortise case, thread the new one in, and the lock body, trim and door prep all stay as they are. Two cut keys come with it, and the compression ring and spring are in the box.
3) Do I need a longer Schlage mortise cylinder for a thick door or a deep escutcheon?
Length lives in the rear housing on the Schlage modular cylinder, and six rear housing lengths are made specifically to handle thicker doors. So a thick door or a deep trim ring is a matter of fitting the right rear housing rather than buying a different cylinder outright. Set it so the front housing sits close to flush with the face of the trim. A cylinder standing proud of the trim gives someone something to grab with a wrench, and one that sits too deep won't reach the cam hub properly.
4) Does the Schlage 20-001 mortise cylinder include the compression ring and spring, or are those ordered separately?
Both are included. The compression ring and spring sit behind the front housing and take up the gap between the cylinder and the trim, so the cylinder pulls up tight against the face and doesn't work itself loose over time. One less line item to chase when you're building out the job.
5) What Schlage keyways is this mortise cylinder available in, and will it work in the master key system I already have?
Keyway is something you pick when ordering. Classic sections C, CE, EF, F, FG and G are offered, along with multi-section keyways in the C and S families including C125, C234, C345, S123, S234 and S345. The modular cylinder supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so matching a building that's already mastered is a question of specifying the correct section, not rebuilding the system. Each cylinder ships with two cut keys.
6) Can I get key control on these cylinders, or will tenants get keys copied at the hardware store?
Key control is a keyway decision, not a different cylinder. The Schlage modular cylinder supports Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, and it's listed for both basic and enhanced security, so the same body covers a standard Classic section on interior doors and a restricted, patent-protected section on exterior or sensitive openings. Everest 29 and Primus XP blanks are controlled, which is what keeps duplication out of the corner hardware store. Specify the keyway on the order.
7) Can I get a Schlage mortise cylinder in a finish that matches the levers already on my doors?
Twelve finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. Only the front housing shows once the cylinder is in, and Schlage makes that housing in all the lock finishes, so matching a run of existing openings comes down to reading the BHMA finish number off the hardware you already have and ordering to it.
8) Can this mortise cylinder go into a rim exit device?
No. A mortise cylinder threads into the lock case and turns the lock through a cam, and the Schlage 20-001 carries the L583-476 straight cam for exactly that. A rim exit device is driven by a tailpiece instead, which is what the Corbin Russwin 3070 6-pin rim cylinder housing with the 1-7/8 inch tailpiece provides. The two are not interchangeable in the same prep. Worth knowing on the Schlage side: the modular cylinder platform converts between mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so the same cylinder body can be reconfigured rather than replaced when the format changes.
9) Is this a conventional cylinder or does it take an interchangeable core?
Conventional. The Schlage 20-001 is keyed in the cylinder itself and comes with two cut keys; the modularity here is in the front and rear housings, cam and tailpiece, not a removable core. A facility standardized on interchangeable cores wants a different part. BEST 1C 5-pin standard cores and the 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder cover the small format route, and the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch large format IC mortise cylinder listed for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam.
10) Will a Schlage 20-001 mortise cylinder work in an aluminum storefront door?
Not the part to reach for. The 20-001 is a commercial mortise cylinder sized and cammed for mortise lock cases in standard doors. Narrow stile aluminum is a different problem: for those openings the Adams Rite 4036 is the Grade 1 mortise cylinder, listed down to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. If the storefront runs an MS1847 deadlock and you need a cylinder pull rather than a plain cylinder, the Adams Rite 4024 mounts with a trim plate and the 4025 uses through-screws. On a wood door with a 5017 deadlock, the 4026 is the one.
11) Our spec calls for BHMA certified cylinders. Does the Schlage 20-001 meet ANSI A156.5?
It does. The 20-001 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, the standard covering cylinders and input devices for locks, and it's a commercial cylinder rather than a residential one. For a facility standard where certification has to be documented on the cylinder line as well as the lock, that's the certification to reference.
12) What is the closest cross-brand match for a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with a straight cam?
The Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder in 1-1/2 inch length with the A02 straight cam is the nearest cross in the same format: same 1-1/2 inch mortise body, same straight cam geometry driving the lock case. What separates the two is the key system. The Schlage Commercial 20-001 is a 6-pin mortise cylinder carrying the L583-476 cam, supplied with 2 keys, and it is cut in Schlage sections including C, C125, EF, F, G and the S-series, so it drops into an existing Schlage master key system without adding a second key to the ring. Pick the 20-001 when the building is already keyed Schlage, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 when the opening is being keyed to a Corbin Russwin system.
13) We want to rekey mortise locks in-house without pulling cylinders. What replaces a conventional keyed mortise cylinder?
An interchangeable core cylinder is the swap. The Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with the A01 Schlage L cam, so it occupies the same 1-1/2 inch mortise position but accepts a removable core that a control key pulls in seconds. On the BEST side, the Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder and the 1CDF drill resistant preferred patented 7-pin brass 150 series core cover the same idea, with the 1C series standard 5-pin core as the plainer version. The Schlage 20-001 is a conventional 6-pin cylinder assembled with a compression ring and spring and supplied with 2 keys, so rekeying it means repinning the plug rather than exchanging a core. Facilities that turn over tenants often lean interchangeable core; buildings with a stable key system and a locksmith on call stay conventional.
14) Some of our doors only need the cylinder face to match, with no key operation. Is a keyed cylinder still the answer?
Not for those openings. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter is a non-keyed part that gives you the cylinder face without any locking function, in rim format. The Schlage 20-001 is the opposite case: a keyed 6-pin mortise cylinder supplied with 2 keys and offered in finishes from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel, so a keyed opening in a run of doors can be matched visually to the others. Match the format first, keyed versus dummy and mortise versus rim, then match the finish.
15) Our lever locks take a small round cylinder that clips into the lever. Is that the same part as a mortise cylinder?
It is a different part. Key-in-lever and key-in-knob cylinders sit inside the lever or knob rather than threading into a mortise case. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder in the RU/T series, 6-pin, G keyway, keyed different with 2 cut keys. The Kaba Ilco 1539 series is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, and the 1579 series is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent locks. The Schlage 20-001 is a mortise cylinder with the L583-476 straight cam. If the building runs a G section master key system, note that the 20-001 is also cut in a G keyway, so mortise doors and lever doors can sit on the same key even though the cylinder formats differ.
16) The apartment entry doors have deadbolts and handlesets, not mortise locks. What cylinder covers those?
Those take deadbolt and rim style cylinders rather than a mortise cylinder. The Kaba Ilco 1549 series is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder, and the 1599 series is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder. On the Medeco side, the 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder positions. The Schlage 20-001 is the commercial mortise cylinder for mortise lock cases. A mixed property usually needs both lines: the mortise cylinder for the commercial and common area doors, a deadbolt cylinder for the unit entries.
17) How much does the cam matter when I cross-reference a mortise cylinder from one brand to another?
It decides whether the lock works. The cam is the arm on the back of the cylinder that drives the lock mechanism, and cylinders of identical length can carry different cams. The Schlage 20-001 uses a straight cam, part L583-476. Among cross-brand mortise cylinders, the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series in 1-1/2 inch also uses a straight cam, the A02, while the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch housing uses the A01 cloverleaf cam and the 1080 Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch LFIC cylinder uses the A01 cam configured for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. Cross-reference length and cam together, never length alone.
18) The storefront has an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and the outside of the door needs a pull with a cylinder in it. Is a mortise cylinder what I order?
A mortise cylinder alone will not give you the pull. For that opening the Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting designed for the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the same MS1847. For a wood door version, the 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. The Schlage 20-001 is the cylinder by itself, a 6-pin mortise cylinder with a straight cam, compression ring and spring, for a mortise lock case that already has its own trim.
19) Our facility spec calls for cylinders certified to ANSI A156.5. Which of the cross-brand mortise cylinders meet that kind of requirement?
The Schlage 20-001 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which is the auxiliary lock and cylinder standard a facility spec normally cites for this class of part. Among cross-brand mortise cylinders, the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder in the 4036 series, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 in 1-1/2 inch with the A02 straight cam and the 1080 in 1-1/2 inch LFIC are both Grade 1 series cylinders. For a submittal package, cite the certification alongside the cylinder length and cam so the approving authority is reviewing the same three facts the installer will need in the field.
