Schlage L283-602 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage L283-602 lock case handed, and what happens if I order the wrong hand?
Handing matters. The L283-602 RH is built right-handed and cannot be flipped in the field to serve a left-hand opening. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right and the door swings away from you, it is right-hand. Get that wrong and the case will not operate correctly in the lock body.
2) Do I need to re-prep the door or change the trim to install the L283 lock case?
No door work is required. The L283 is engineered as a direct drop-in replacement for the case inside a compatible Vandlgard lockset, so the existing mortise pocket, trim and strike stay in place. You are only replacing the internal case.
3) I manage a building with Vandlgard levers that spin freely when locked. Is the lock case the part that fails?
Vandlgard levers are meant to rotate freely when the lock is secured, which is the clutch mechanism inside the lock case doing its job. When that clutching or the latch retraction stops working, the L283 case is the serviceable component you swap to restore function on an LV9040/44 lock. It is a drop-in case replacement, so the trim, cylinder and door prep stay as they are.
4) Is the L283-602 an aftermarket part or a genuine Schlage component?
Genuine Schlage. The L283-602 RH is an authentic Schlage replacement case made to the original manufacturer's specification for the Vandlgard system, which is what keeps the fit and the clutch action the same as the case coming out.
5) Is the Schlage L283 lock case suitable for a residential door?
It is a commercial component. Schlage catalogues the L283 as commercial-grade, and it is intended for the traffic you see in offices, schools, hospitals, retail, warehouses, multi-tenant residential and government buildings. For a single home door it is the wrong class of part unless you already have an LV9040/44 Vandlgard lock in that opening.
