Schlage ND73L LLL XXX LLL LLL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What exactly comes in the Schlage ND73L chassis order, and what do I still need to buy?
The ND73L is the corridor lock chassis only, supplied less all possible parts and unfinished. No trim, no cylinder, no springs, no additional components are included. You source the lever trim, cylinder, and any springs or small parts separately to match the existing opening. Plan the order as a chassis plus trim package, not a complete lockset.
2) Is the Schlage ND73L a complete corridor lockset or just the internal mechanism?
Just the mechanism. It is the core structural component of the ND Series corridor lock, catalogued as a replacement chassis rather than a finished lockset. A buyer expecting a lever set in a box will be disappointed; this is what goes inside the door when the chassis itself has failed and the existing trim is still good.
3) Will the ND73L chassis work in an existing Schlage ND Series lock I already have in the door?
Yes, that is its intended use. The ND73L is designed as a replacement chassis within existing ND Series corridor lock installations, so an ND Series corridor lock that has worn out mechanically can be repaired at the component level instead of replacing the whole lock and re-prepping the door. The function must match: this chassis is the corridor lock function, so use it where the original was a corridor lock.
4) Is the Schlage ND73L rated Grade 1, and is that enough for a school or hospital corridor?
Grade 1 is the rating, meeting the ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 commercial performance standard, which is the highest classification for commercial door hardware. That is the level specified for heavy-traffic institutional openings, and the listed applications include educational facilities, healthcare institutions, and government buildings. For an MRO buyer standardizing a facility on Grade 1 cylindrical locks, the ND platform is the family this component belongs to.
5) Since the ND73L is unfinished, does that limit which finish my lever trim can be?
No. The chassis is supplied unfinished specifically so it can be paired with any of the ND Series finish options and trim components, which are selected separately. The chassis sits inside the door where it isn't seen, so the visible finish is entirely decided by the trim you order with it. That makes matching a building's existing finish straightforward.
6) What is a corridor lock function and where would I use one?
A corridor lock secures a passage while still allowing egress from both sides under the appropriate conditions, which is why it shows up on classroom, office, and patient-room corridor doors rather than on a straight storeroom or entry opening. If you need an opening that stays latched against the corridor but lets people out, this is the function; if you need key-only entry with no inside release behaviour, a different ND function is the right call.
7) Is the ND73L suitable for residential doors, or commercial only?
Commercial only. It is classified as commercial-grade door hardware and intended for applications where professional performance standards apply, typically office buildings, retail, industrial and warehouse space, and multi-tenant residential properties. For a single-family house, a commercial ND chassis is more hardware than the opening calls for and the corridor function rarely suits a residential door.
