Schlage ND96L LLL XXX LLL LLL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What exactly comes with the Schlage ND96L chassis ordered less all possible parts?
You get the bare lock chassis only. No levers or trim, no cylinder, no roses or escutcheons, no strike. It is the mechanical storeroom-function assembly that sits inside the door, and every other component of the lockset has to be specified and ordered separately. Buyers use it this way when they already have ND Series trim on the door and only the working guts have failed.
2) Will the ND96L chassis work with the ND Series levers and roses already on my doors?
Yes, it is built for the Schlage ND Series platform and takes corresponding ND Series trim and components. That is the point of buying it bare: if the levers, roses and cylinder on the opening are ND Series and still serviceable, you replace only the chassis and reuse the visible hardware. It will not accept trim from another Schlage line or another manufacturer.
3) What does the storeroom function on the ND96L actually do at the door?
Outside lever stays locked at all times and is released only by the key or credential in the cylinder. The inside lever is always free, so anyone inside can get out without a key. That is why storeroom function is the usual pick for supply rooms, mechanical spaces, electrical closets and stairwell entries where the door must never be left unlocked by accident.
4) Is the Schlage ND96L rated for high-traffic commercial openings?
It is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, the heaviest commercial rating, and the ND96L is specified as commercial rather than residential. Grade 1 is what most institutional and government specs call out for cylindrical locks on main and high-use openings, so this chassis meets that line on the drawing for office buildings, schools, hospitals, retail, warehouses and municipal facilities.
5) Can I use the ND96L as a direct replacement for a failed ND96L lock already in the door?
That is its main use. It is offered as a replacement chassis for existing Schlage ND96L storeroom installations, so the door prep, the trim and the cylinder already in place stay put and only the chassis swaps out. If the existing lock is a different ND function, the storeroom behavior of this chassis will change how the opening works, so match the function before you pull the old one.
6) What is Vandlgard and does it change how the lever behaves?
Vandlgard is Schlage's clutched-lever feature carried in this chassis. When the outside lever is locked it turns freely rather than transmitting force into the lock mechanism, so someone hanging on it or kicking it down does not break the internals. Day to day it feels the same to an authorized user with a key; the difference shows up in abuse resistance in schools, transit corridors and multi-tenant common areas.
7) Why is the ND96L chassis unfinished, and will that show on the door?
The chassis ships unfinished because it is the internal assembly, not a visible part. Finish lives on the levers, roses and escutcheons you pair with it, so nothing about the unfinished state affects how the opening looks once the ND Series trim is back on. It also means one chassis part number covers every finish you already have standing in the building.
8) What model designation should I quote when ordering this Schlage chassis?
Order it as Schlage ND96L, model string ND96L LLL XXX LLL LLL. The ND96L designates the ND Series Grade 1 storeroom function with Vandlgard, and the trailing placeholders reflect that lever design, finish, cylinder and keying are all left off. Specify those items on separate lines.
