Schlage Electronics CT-5000 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage CT5000 controller work with the card readers I already have on the door?
The CT5000 offline controller takes Wiegand or Clock and Data reader inputs, and it supports up to 2 parallel reader inputs on a single opening. So a standard Wiegand output reader wires straight to it, and you can run two readers (in and out, or a keypad plus a card reader) on the same door off one controller. It does not have programming in the lock like an electronic lockset does; it sits between the reader and the locking device and switches the strike.
2) Should I use an offline controller like the CT5000 or an electronic lockset for a single door?
An electronic lock carries the programming inside the lock itself. The CT5000 is the alternative when the locking device is not a lock at all, for example an electric strike, a mag lock on a glass front entrance, or a gate, where you need something to sit between the card reader and that device and make the access decision. It handles one opening. It also works in a mixed system: the same Schlage Express desktop software manages the CT5000 alongside AD-200 or CO-200 electronic locks, so a building with both does not need two management systems.
3) Does the CT5000 unlock or stay locked when the power drops?
That is your choice at configuration. The CT5000 can be set to fail safe or fail secure, so it can be spec'd either way to suit the code requirement on the opening, egress doors typically fail safe and secured storage or exterior openings typically fail secure. It provides 3 form C relay outputs, so a single controller can drive the locking device and still have dry contacts left for auxiliary functions.
4) How do you program a Schlage CT5000, and what do you need to buy to do it?
Three ways. Manually at a compatible keypad; with Schlage Utility Software on a compatible Android device connected through an SUS-A cable; or from Schlage Express PC software or a Software Alliances member solution for managing users, audits and locks across a site. The controller ships with a 15 foot cable and wall plate so the programming connection point can be mounted somewhere reachable instead of at the controller itself, and a 125 foot cable is available if the controller is above a ceiling or in a remote closet. Plan on a handheld device kit to do updates at the door.
5) What is the difference between the Schlage CT5000 and a CDVI Atrium A22 two door controller?
Door count is the first split. The CT5000 is a single opening controller, while the CDVI Americas A22 ATRIUM is a 2-door controller and comes with a power supply and enclosure. CDVI also lists the A22K KRYPTO as a high security encrypted 2-door controller, and the A22K1 version ships with two K1 readers and DESFire EV2 credentials, so that one arrives as a complete controller and reader package. If you are controlling two leaves or two nearby openings from one point, the two door units cover both on one board; if you are adding electronics to one opening and want it managed under Schlage Express with your existing AD-200 or CO-200 locks, the CT5000 is the one that fits that system.
6) I need a controller, readers and electric strikes for a small job. Is the Schlage CT5000 a complete kit?
No. The CT5000 is the controller only, the piece that communicates between devices like electric strikes and card readers, so the reader, the locking device and the power for it are separate line items. If you want the parts to arrive together, the CDVI Americas A22K1DS KRYPTO Kit comes with door strikes included, and the A22K1 bundles two K1 readers with DESFire EV2 credentials. Both of those are two door units rather than single opening.
7) What controller handles two doors instead of one opening?
The Schlage CT5000 is an offline single opening controller, so one unit governs one door. Where two openings have to be managed from a single controller, the CDVI Americas A22 ATRIUM is a 2-door controller supplied with a power supply and enclosure. Both are controllers that work with separate readers rather than locks with the electronics in the lock body.
8) Is there a controller that ships with the readers and credentials in the same package?
The CT5000 supports up to 2 parallel Wiegand or Clock and Data reader inputs, with the readers and credentials sourced separately. The CDVI Americas Atrium high security 2-door controller comes as a package with 2 K1 readers and DESFire EV2 credentials under part number CDVA22K1. That is the difference in scope: one is the controller alone for an opening, the other is a controller plus its reader and credential set.
9) What should I order if I also need the door strikes with the access control kit?
The CT5000 is the controller that communicates with devices like electric strikes and card readers, with those devices ordered on their own. If you want the strikes included in the same kit, the CDVI Americas A22K1DS is a KRYPTO kit supplied with door strikes. Choose the CT5000 when the strike is already at the opening or specified separately, and the A22K1DS when the package should cover the strike as well.
10) Can the Schlage CT5000 do card plus PIN two factor at one door?
Yes, with the right hardware on the wall. Multi-factor authentication is available when the CT5000 is installed with a keypad plus a card reader, which is exactly the two-reader configuration its 2 parallel reader inputs allow. Credential verification runs in under one second, so the second factor does not add a noticeable wait at the door.
11) How many users and how much audit history does the Schlage CT5000 hold?
Up to 5,000 users with an audit trail of up to 5,000 events. The actual ceiling depends on which access control software you run it under. It also supports holidays and time zones, so you can schedule auto lock and unlock windows rather than managing every event by hand.
12) Can I wire door position and request to exit into the Schlage CT5000?
Yes. The CT5000 has 3 inputs that can include door position and request to exit, which is what you need for door forced and door held alarms and for keeping the REX from generating a forced-open event. Those three inputs plus the 3 form C relay outputs cover a typical single-opening install without an extra interface board.
13) Can the Schlage CT5000 be put on a network later, or is it offline forever?
It is offline out of the box, meaning every change is made at the controller rather than pushed from a server. It is upgradable to a wireless reader interface configuration for network integration when the site's needs change, so an installation that starts as standalone doors does not have to be torn out to get onto a head end later.
14) For a job that calls for encrypted credential communication, what is the alternative to the CT5000?
The CT5000 reads through Wiegand or Clock and Data reader inputs and holds up to 5,000 users with an audit trail of up to 5,000 events. Where the specification calls for high security encryption between reader and controller, the CDVI Americas A22K Krypto is a high security encrypted 2-door controller. Both are controllers driven by separate readers, so the reader selection follows the controller either way.
15) Can a CDVI Atrium controller be managed alongside AD-200 and CO-200 locks?
The CT5000 is supported in Schlage Express desktop software and can be managed in the same system as AD-200 or CO-200 electronic locks, and it is programmed with the Schlage Utility Software on a compatible Android device. The CDVI Americas A22 ATRIUM is a 2-door controller on its own platform, so it is a substitute for the opening hardware rather than for the Schlage software environment. If the site is already administered through Schlage Express, that is the distinction to weigh.
16) Will a Schlage CT5000 survive on an unheated exterior door or a parking gate?
Rated for -31 F to 151 F (-35 C to 66 C) and 0 to 100 percent condensing humidity, so an unconditioned vestibule, a parking structure, or a gate house is within its operating range. Note that the controller is the electronics box, not the reader, so mount it inside the secure side and run the reader out to the exposed location.
17) Is the Schlage CT5000 suitable for a residential rental unit door?
The CT5000 is a commercial product, and it is priced and configured for commercial access control rather than an apartment entry door. For a multi-family building it makes more sense at the shared openings, the main entrance, the amenity room, the mechanical or maintenance door, where you want an audit trail of who went through and the ability to shut off a credential the day a tenant moves out. Individual unit doors are usually better served by a lockset with the electronics in the lock.
