Schlage KS43D2200 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can a Schlage KS43D padlock be master keyed into the Schlage key system already used on my building's doors?
That's the point of the KS43 series. Schlage's portable security padlocks can be master keyed into any new or existing Schlage key system, so the padlock on a gate, cage, or storage room runs off the same key hierarchy as the door hardware and nobody carries a separate padlock key. The cylinder is a 6-pin solid brass conventional Key-In-Lever cylinder, pinned 5, C keyway, and it ships keyed different unless you specify otherwise. If you're keying it into an existing system, you order it that way rather than taking the KD default.
2) What is the difference between the with-cylinder and less-cylinder options on the Schlage KS43 padlock?
With cylinder means the padlock arrives complete with the Schlage Key-In-Lever cylinder installed and two nickel silver cut keys branded Schlage. Less cylinder means the body and shackle only, and you supply and install the Key-In-Lever cylinder yourself. Locksmiths and facilities that pin their own cylinders take the less-cylinder version so the padlock joins the existing master key system on their own bench; anyone who wants a working lock out of the box takes the with-cylinder version.
3) Which shackle clearance should I order on a Schlage KS43 padlock, 1-1/2 inch or 2 inch?
Measure what the shackle has to pass through and clear. The KS43 comes in two shackle clearances, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch, both on a 3/8 inch diameter shackle. A 1-1/2 inch clearance suits a standard hasp staple or a chain link gate latch where the shackle only has to loop a small amount of material. The 2 inch clearance is what you need for thicker hasps, doubled chain, or a cage door where the shackle has to reach across more steel. Too much clearance leaves exposed shackle for a bolt cutter, so take the shorter one if it fits.
4) What is the closest brass-body commercial padlock to the Schlage KS43D if the facility keys everything to Sargent?
The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock with a US4 satin brass finish, which lines up closely with the KS43D/KS43F in a 606 satin brass finish and brass substrate. If the rest of the facility runs Sargent cylinders, the 758 keeps the padlocks on the same key system the doors already use. Where they differ is key retention: the Sargent 858 is the non-key-retaining version with a stainless steel shackle, so the key comes out while the lock hangs open, and the 758 holds the key until the shackle is closed again.
5) What padlock should be used outdoors or in a wash-down area instead of a brass Schlage KS43?
The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder. The Schlage KS43D/KS43F uses a brass body with a molybdenum hardened steel shackle and meets ASTM standards for corrosion resistance, which covers normal exterior gates and yard use. For a coastal site, a chemical area, or anything sprayed down regularly, the sealed stainless 521 G8R is the harder-service choice. ABUS also builds the T84MB/30 with a black sleeve for marine use, though at a 13/64 inch shackle diameter it is a much lighter lock than the 3/8 inch Schlage shackle.
6) Are ABUS 72/30 and 74/40 safety padlocks a substitute for a Schlage KS43 brass padlock?
They are not the same tool. The ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body and a 3/16 inch shackle diameter, and the 74/40 is an insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder and a 1/4 inch shackle. Safety padlocks are built for lockout/tagout, where each worker carries a uniquely keyed lock and the point is that nobody else can open it. The Schlage KS43D/KS43F runs the opposite direction: it is master keyed into a new or existing Schlage key system so one key covers padlocks and door hardware together. Its 3/8 inch shackle is also heavier than either ABUS. Specify the ABUS locks for LOTO stations and the KS43 for gates, cages, and storage that belong on the facility keyway.
7) Is the Schlage KS43 padlock good enough for outdoor gates and exterior use?
It's built for it. The shackle is molybdenum hardened steel for cut resistance, the lock body is brass, and the whole lock meets or exceeds ASTM standards for standard steel shackle, shackle cutting, and corrosion resistance. Brass is the reason it holds up outside; it doesn't rust the way a plain steel body does. Finish is 606 satin brass, cylinder included.
8) What does the double deadbolt locking mechanism on the Schlage KS43 padlock actually do?
It locks the shackle on both legs instead of one. A single-locking padlock only latches the long leg, so a hard pull or a pry on the heel can spring it. Double deadbolt locking engages both the toe and the heel of the shackle, so both sides have to be defeated. Combined with the molybdenum hardened steel shackle, that's the KS43's resistance to prying and cutting attacks rather than picking.
9) Can the shackle on a Schlage KS43 padlock be replaced or swapped?
Yes. The KS43 uses Schlage's patented interchangeable shackle design, so the lock comes apart without destroying it and the shackle can be pulled and changed. That matters on a large property where a shackle gets cut or bent: you replace the shackle instead of scrapping the lock and rekeying a new one into your master system.
10) What is the alternative to a Schlage KS43 padlock if I need an interchangeable core or a removable core padlock?
The KS43 takes a conventional Key-In-Lever cylinder, not a removable core, so if your facility is standardized on removable cores you want a different lock. The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. If you want the Sargent brass-body equivalent without removable core, the 758 is key retaining with a US4 satin brass finish and the 858 is the non-key-retaining version with a stainless shackle.
11) Is the Schlage KS43 padlock a lockout tagout safety padlock?
No. The KS43 is a brass-bodied commercial security padlock keyed into a Schlage system, which is the opposite of what electrical lockout tagout calls for. For LOTO you want a non-conductive body: the ABUS 74/40 is an insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder, 1/4 inch shackle diameter and 1-1/2 inch body width, the ABUS 76/40 is a plastic-covered aluminum core lock with a 1/4 inch shackle, and the ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body and 3/16 inch shackle.
12) What brass padlock has a heavier shackle than the Schlage KS43 for a high-risk gate?
The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in satin chrome. That is a thicker shackle than the 3/8 inch on the Schlage KS43D/KS43F, and M3 is a patented restricted key system, so keys cannot be duplicated over the counter. Medeco also builds the 54515G XT electronic padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle for indoor and outdoor use, which records who opened what instead of relying on shackle size. The KS43 remains the choice when the padlock has to share the building's existing Schlage keyway.
13) Which padlock keeps the key captive so it cannot be walked off while the gate is open?
The Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock: the key will not withdraw until the shackle is locked, which is how a property manager keeps a gate from being left unlocked. The Schlage KS43D/KS43F uses a conventional key-in-lever cylinder with two nickel silver keys per lock. Where the opposite behavior is wanted, so one key can open a run of locks in sequence without being trapped in the first, the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are non-key-retaining, the 82-856 with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle.
14) Will a Schlage KS43 padlock match the finish on my existing Schlage door hardware?
The KS43 is 606 satin brass, body and cylinder both, which is the standard satin brass architectural finish and reads the same as US4 on other manufacturers' hardware. On a property already trimmed out in satin brass levers and exit devices, the padlocks on the storage rooms and gates will match rather than stand out as a random hardware store lock.
15) How many keys come with a Schlage KS43 padlock?
Two nickel silver cut keys per lock, branded Schlage, on the with-cylinder version. That's per padlock, so a run of keyed-different locks arrives with two keys each and no spare beyond that. If you're buying the less-cylinder version there is no cylinder and no keys in the box, since you're fitting your own Key-In-Lever cylinder.
