The L283-422 is a replacement indicator kit only. The lock is not included, so you order the L Series mortise lock separately and add this kit to it. It's the OCCUPIED/VACANT sectional indicator for the outside of the door, with a coin turn for the privacy function.

It's built for the Schlage L Series mortise lock, and it's the sectional trim version, so the lock it goes on has to be L Series with sectional trim rather than an escutcheon. Put it on a different mortise line and the trim won't land.

Emergency override is by small screwdriver, not by an emergency key.
