1) What does the Schlage ND172 actually do, and does it lock?
The ND172 is double dummy trim, meaning a fixed lever on both faces of the door. It has no latch and no locking function at all, so it doesn't hold the door shut. 5) Can I use a Schlage ND172 dummy lever on a fire rated door?
Careful here. The UL/cUL fire listings published for the ND Series cover the locks: 3 hour A label single doors up to 4'0" x 10'0", 3 hour pairs at 8'0" x 8'0" and 90 minute pairs at 8'0" x 10'0" with the 3/4 inch latch option. Those ratings hang on a latch, and dummy trim has none. On a rated opening the inactive leaf still has to be positively latched by something else, typically flush bolts or a functioning lock, and the ND172 is only the trim that makes it look like the rest.
