Schlage ND70BDC Rhodes Classroom Lock - Disposable SFIC, 2-3/4" Backset Square Corner Deadlatch

Schlage Lock Company ND Series

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

Features:

  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lbs of lever torque (2.6x BHMA, for general abuse)
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA, for pry-bar attacks)
  • No access with minimum 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA, for sledgehammer attacks)
  • Near-zero droop and wobble beyond 16 million cycles (after 16x BHMA) – without the use of set screws or O-rings

Schlage ND70BDC-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND70BDC lock down a classroom door in an emergency?
It's a classroom security function with 180-degree lockdown, keyed on both sides. Rotating the key 180 degrees in either lever locks the outside lever, so a teacher never has to step into the corridor to secure the room. The inside lever stays free for egress in the unlocked state, and the function is catalogued to ANSI/BHMA F110.
2) What strike comes with the Schlage ND70BDC, and will it drop into an existing ANSI frame prep?
The 10-025 ANSI strike is included: 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no dust box. That is the standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch frame prep, so it goes straight into most commercial hollow metal frames. If your frame needs a box, or a longer lip to clear trim or a stop, ANSI strikes with alternate lip lengths and dust box options are available.
3) Is this lock handed? I need to order for both left and right hand classroom doors.
Non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. You do not need to specify hand when ordering, and a spare sitting in the shop works on any door in the building.
4) What is a disposable SFIC core, and do I need to order cylinders separately?
The BDC designation means it comes with a disposable construction core in the small format interchangeable core housing. The builder uses the throwaway core through construction, then the facility's own permanent SFIC cores get dropped in at turnover without pulling the lock apart. You still need to supply or order the permanent 6- or 7-pin SFIC cores and keys. The ND chassis also supports less-cylinder builds for non-Schlage cores from Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale.
5) Can I retrofit this into doors that already have cylindrical locks from another series?
All ND Series locks use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation, so they interchange with each other and with other hardware cut to that prep. That covers the electronic functions and the indicator trims too, which is why it is used for both new construction and retrofit where Grade 1 strength is wanted. You still need to match the backset in the door and the latch corner style.
6) Double cylinder classroom security versus a single-cylinder classroom lock, which should I specify?
The ND70BDC is a double cylinder lock: both levers are fixed and entry is by key in either lever, with lockdown available from inside or out. A single-cylinder classroom lock (key outside only, inside lever always free) is simpler and avoids any key-required-to-exit concern, but the teacher has to open the door to lock it. If you want single-cylinder classroom instead, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is a Grade 1 clutching option for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and Dexter also lists a C1000 classroom security version.
7) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage ND70BDC classroom security lever?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom security cylindrical lever lock is the nearest match from another brand: it is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever with a classroom security function, the same duty class and lock type as the ND70BDC, which is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever with a classroom security 180-degree lockdown function. The Dexter is listed for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. Verify keyway and cylinder format against the existing keying system before substituting.
8) Do I need classroom security, or will a standard classroom function lock do?
Classroom security means the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from either side, so a teacher can lock down without stepping into the corridor; that is what the Schlage ND70BDC does, with both levers keyed. A standard classroom lock is keyed on the outside only. If lockdown from inside the room is not required, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock or the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever with a 2-3/4 inch backset covers the simpler case.
9) Does the square corner latch matter if my door has round corner latch mortises?
Yes, it does. The supplied 13-247 deadlatch has a square corner faceplate measuring 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches. On a hollow metal door prepped with a radius corner cutout, a square faceplate leaves gaps at the corners and won't sit flush, so you either order a round corner latch or file the mortise square.
10) What finish does the ND70BDC come in, and will it match the rest of my ND Series openings?
It's supplied in 626 satin chrome (US26D), the standard institutional finish, so it matches existing ND Series levers in 626 across the building. The ND family as a whole is offered in ten finishes including 605 bright brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 626AM antimicrobial satin chrome and 643e aged bronze.
11) Is there a cheaper classroom lever if the opening isn't a Grade 1 spec?
For lighter-duty or budget openings, the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and the same 2-3/4 inch backset. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors if the room only needs key-in entry with no lockdown. Neither carries the Grade 1 rating or the double cylinder lockdown the ND70BDC has.
12) Is the ND70BDC an electronic or access-control lock?
No, it is a purely mechanical keyed cylindrical lever lock. The ND Series does include six wired electrified functions with autodetecting 12-24V DC input, switch-selectable fail safe or fail secure, modular request-to-exit, and 0.23 A max / 0.01 A holding current, but those are separate functions you have to order as electrified. If you need a Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever instead, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 fail safe lever runs 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
13) What should I use instead of the ND70BDC on a storeroom or utility door?
The ND70BDC is a classroom security function where key access is available from either lever. A storeroom door usually wants the outside lever permanently fixed with key-only entry: the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lever, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. If Grade 1 is required on that opening, the Dexter C1000 asylum function keeps both levers fixed with key retraction.
14) Can a Grade 1 passage lever be used in place of the ND70BDC on the same door prep?
Only where no keying is wanted. The Schlage ND70BDC is a keyed lock with cylinders in both levers; a passage lever is non-keyed and never locks. If the opening turns out to be a passage door, Grade 1 options include the Falcon K101 passage cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant passage lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Design Hardware X75 passage lever for 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) Is a keypad or electronic leverset an alternative to the ND70BDC for classroom lockdown?
It is a different security model. The Schlage ND70BDC is a mechanical, non-electronic lock controlled entirely by key. Keypad alternatives such as the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock, the Emtek Classic keypad leverset, and the Lockey 1150 heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch use code entry rather than a cylinder, so they will not join an existing master key system.
16) Is an office or entrance lever an acceptable substitute for the ND70BDC?
No, the locking behavior is different. The ND70BDC keys from both levers for classroom security lockdown. Entrance and office levers lock by push button from inside, with the key used for entry: the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 entry/office cylindrical lever, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial entry lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body. Those suit offices, not a room that has to be locked down under code-driven classroom security.
17) What is the lock body made of, and will it hold up in a coastal or humid school?
Construction is a modular design of zinc and steel components, plated for corrosion protection, with a cast steel spindle rated beyond 16 million cycles. For high-touch areas there is also a 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial finish in the ND family.
18) What matches the ND70BDC's look on an inactive leaf or pull-only door?
Use a dummy trim rather than a lock chassis. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 dummy cylindrical lever; the BEST 7KC single dummy trim is the Grade 2 medium duty version. None of these latch or lock, so they are not substitutes for the keyed ND70BDC on a secured opening.
19) Can I use an Accentra or Yale lever lock and still key it to my Schlage system?
There is an adapter path. The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which lets Schlage cylinders be fitted to that line. The Schlage ND70BDC itself accepts Schlage cylinder formats natively, so no adapter is needed on the ND chassis. Confirm the specific Accentra lock body is covered by the kit before ordering.
