Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND96PDEU-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset and door prep does the Schlage ND96EU need?
2-3/4 inch backset, using the standard 13-247 deadlatch with a square corner 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch faceplate. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches. The whole ND Series uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so it drops into an existing ND or ANSI 161 prep without redrilling the door face.
2) Will the ND96EU latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock ships with a 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. If your frame already carries an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout, the existing strike will accept this latch. Watch the lip length: 1-3/16 inches suits a frame where the stop is close to flush with the jamb face. A deeper reveal needs a longer lip so the latch is guided rather than dragging.
3) What do I need to decide when ordering an electrified ND96EU besides finish and lever?
Four choices. Cylinder type: P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway (the standard), L less cylinder, or J less FSIC cylinder if you're pinning to your own system. Keying: KD keyed different, KA keyed alike for a run of doors on one key, or none if you selected a less-cylinder option. RX: yes or no, the request-to-exit switch that tells your access control panel someone left through the door legitimately. And there's a free-text field for special cylinder or keying instructions. With a P cylinder you get two nickel silver cut keys per lock.
4) Can I run an ND96EU on the same key as the mechanical locks already in my building?
Yes, if those locks are on a Schlage C keyway. The standard P cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in Schlage C, so it pins into an existing C-keyway system directly. If your facility runs a small format interchangeable core, order it J (less FSIC cylinder) and drop your own core in. Order it L (less cylinder) if your locksmith is supplying the cylinder entirely. Choosing KA keys a batch alike for one master or one maintenance key across a run of storerooms.
5) Is the Schlage ND96EU approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and for 8 ft x 8 ft pairs at 3 hours or 8 ft x 10 ft pairs at 90 minutes with the 3/4 inch latch option. They're certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, the wired electrified versions comply with A156.25 for indoor use, and they meet ADA and ICC A117.1 accessibility requirements. Also listed to UL294 for access control.
6) Can I replace a mechanical ND80 storeroom lock with the electrified ND96EU without changing the door?
Yes. Every ND Series lock, mechanical, electrified and electronic, uses the same cylindrical ANSI 161 door prep, so the ND96EU goes into the same hole an ND80 came out of. What changes is the wiring: an electrified lock needs power run to the opening, usually through an electric hinge or a door loop, which a mechanical storeroom lock did not. Function is otherwise the same, outside lever locked, key overrides, inside lever always free.
7) Will the ND96EU fit a 2 inch thick door?
No. The ND96EU is set up for a 1-3/4 inch door, the standard commercial thickness. If your leaf is thicker, look at a lock whose published range covers it: the Falcon K101 Grade 1 cylindrical covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical covers 1-3/4 to 2 inches. Neither of those is electrified, so if you need electric release on a thick door, get the door thickness confirmed against the specific electrified chassis before you order.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage ND96EU electrified storeroom lever?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the nearest peer: it is a Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever lock offered keyed with 12VAC/DC power, fitted for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The ND96EU is a Grade 1 cylindrical storeroom lever whose outside lever stays disengaged until released by key or electric current, with the inside lever always free for egress, and it is fail-secure. The CL33903 is a fail safe lever, so the outside trim behaves the opposite way on loss of power. Match the power behavior your access control drawing calls for before you swap one for the other.
9) If the door does not need electric release, what storeroom lever can be used instead of the ND96EU?
For a storeroom opening with no wiring, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both are purely mechanical storeroom function. The ND96EU is a Grade 1 storeroom lever that adds electric release of the outside lever and carries Schlage Vandlgard trim; it is set up for 1-3/4 inch doors with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
10) Does a Corbin Russwin CL33903 fail safe lever do the same job as an ND96EU?
No. The ND96EU is fail-secure: the outside lever is continuously disengaged until unlocked by key or electric current, so cutting power leaves the outside locked and the door secure. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified lever, which releases the outside trim when power drops. Both are Grade 1 electrified cylindrical levers, so the swap is mechanically plausible and functionally wrong unless the opening was specified fail safe. Fire and egress plans usually dictate which one the opening takes.
11) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ND96EU lever lock?
No handing to specify. The ND96EU is non-handed, and it ships with the same lever, rose and finish on both faces of the door. That's one less thing to get wrong on a multi-door order, and it means a single part number covers left and right hand openings across a building.
12) What does Vandlgard actually do on a Schlage ND lock?
Vandlgard trim lets the outside lever rotate freely up and down while the lock is secure, so a kick or a hard yank on the lever spends its force on nothing instead of the chassis. On a storeroom opening that gets abused (a school corridor, a loading area, a public restroom run) that's what keeps the lock working. Underneath, the ND chassis is rated to resist 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque and 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull.
13) Should I order RX (request-to-exit) with an electrified storeroom lock?
Order RX if the opening is monitored by an access control system and you need it to know the difference between an authorized exit and a forced door. Without RX, someone leaving through the door on the free inside lever looks the same to the panel as a door being pushed open, and you get nuisance alarms. If the lock is simply released by a card reader or a remote button with no door position monitoring, you can skip it. RX is a build option on the ND96EU, not a field add-on, so decide before the order goes in.
14) What levers and finishes can I get on a Schlage ND96EU, and will they match my other doors?
Nine lever designs: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The trim suites with Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks and with Von Duprin exit devices, so an electrified storeroom door reads the same as the passage and classroom doors around it. Worth noting for healthcare: 626AM is the antimicrobial version of satin chrome.
15) Does the ND96EU need a special power supply, and will the lever get hot?
The electrified ND functions auto-detect 12 or 24V DC, so you don't specify voltage on the order, and the same lock works on either supply. Maximum current draw is 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, low enough that Schlage states it eliminates heated levers, a common complaint on older electrified trim. Size your supply from the 0.4 amp inrush figure across the number of locks on the circuit.
16) What is the difference between a Grade 1 electrified storeroom lock and a Grade 2 mechanical storeroom lever?
Duty and access control, not just function. A Grade 2 mechanical storeroom lever like the Cal-Royal AG05 or the Hager 2580 gives the same locked-outside, free-inside behavior and is keyed only, which is fine for a stockroom that a maintenance tech opens with a key. The ND96EU is Grade 1 heavy duty and adds electric release, so a card reader, intercom or access panel can unlock the door remotely while the key still works as an override. If nothing needs to release the lock electrically, the extra cost of the electrified chassis and the power run buys you nothing.
17) Can I use a non-Schlage cylinder in an ND Series lock?
Yes. Three spring cage sets cover all Schlage cylinder formats (conventional, FSIC and SFIC) plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so you can keep a building on an existing key system from another manufacturer. One caveat Schlage states outright: the beyond-Grade-1 numbers, the 3,100 in-lb torque and 1,600 lb pull figures, apply with Schlage cylinders. With a competitive cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1, but performance may be below the Schlage figures. For high security keying, the ND accepts Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders.
18) Does the ND96EU meet Buy American requirements for a government or federal project?
It does. ND Series locks meet the Buy American Act and Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. They also carry Florida Building Code compliance (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 for hurricane requirements, which matters if the project is in a coastal high velocity wind zone. California Fire Code compliance applies to levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less: Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. Of the nine lever designs, those six are the ones to specify for a California project.
19) What lever lock should be used on the adjacent unsecured doors when the secured door gets an ND96EU?
For the neighboring corridor and closet doors that do not need to lock, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick; the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors and is also fire rated. Both hold the same Grade 1 level as the ND96EU, which is heavy duty, non-handed, and keyed with two nickel silver keys per lock, so a facility can run one grade across the whole run of doors and only key the openings that need it.
20) Can a keypad leverset replace an electrified storeroom lock like the ND96EU?
They solve different problems. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch; both grant access at the door from a code entered on the lock itself. The ND96EU is a Grade 1 keyed storeroom lever whose outside lever is released by key or by electric current sent from an access control system, and it can be ordered with Request to Exit. If the door is tied into a card reader, intercom or panel, the ND96EU is the one wired to it; a standalone keypad has nothing for the panel to signal.
21) Which lever lock suits a classroom or entry opening rather than a storeroom, at the same grade as the ND96EU?
The Dexter C1000 series covers those functions at Grade 1: the C1000 classroom lever is a clutching keyed lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the C1000 classroom security version adds the second cylinder side, and the C1000 entry/office lever covers the same thickness range. The ND96EU is Grade 1 storeroom function, meaning the outside lever stays locked at all times and only key or electric current lets someone through, with no way to leave it unlocked for a class period. Pick the classroom or entry/office function when staff need to leave the door passable.
22) How durable is a Schlage ND lever in a high traffic corridor?
Cycle tested past 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag, and it holds that without set screws, spacers or O-rings, which are the parts that usually work loose and cause the droop you feel on a tired lever. Five points of engagement carry the lever. ANSI cycle testing is at 3 million cycles, three times the grade requirement. The chassis is zinc and steel. For a school or a hospital corridor that's the number that matters more than the grade badge.
23) What matches an ND96EU on a door that only needs trim, not a working lock?
For a dummy or inactive leaf next to a secured opening, the BEST 9K series 1DT is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever from the 5400 series. Neither has a latch or a cylinder. The ND96EU is a working Grade 1 keyed storeroom lever with a 13-247 deadlatch and a 10-025 ANSI strike, so it is not interchangeable with dummy trim even where the lever shape lines up.
24) If a building already keys to Schlage C but the hardware is Yale, does that change the lock choice?
Not necessarily. The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which lets existing Yale trim take a Schlage cylinder. The ND96EU takes a conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder as standard and is also available less cylinder or less FSIC cylinder for houses that pin their own, with a S123 cylinder and keyway record. On a facility standardizing on one key system, either route keeps the master key working; the ND96EU additionally brings Grade 1 electrified storeroom function to the openings that need electric release.
