Overview

The PM Series offers 26 functions, including three electrified, and four mortise deadbolt functions, all made to meet Schlage’s rigorous quality standards. With popular levers and finish options, Schlage's full key system security line up, and its durable design, you can meet needs for both security and style. They are made to suite with other Allegion products to present a quality, complete door hardware solution and provide a consistent user experience throughout your building or complex. Schlage PM080P PLAA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage PM080 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes. 1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard door thickness for the PM Series mortise case, with 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) the minimum. The case will also go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the lock position in the door, and that option is available EE only.
2) What backset does the PM080 mortise lock need, and can I use it on a 2-3/8 inch prep?
No. The PM Series mortise lock is 2-3/4 inch backset only, so a 2-3/8 inch prep will not work. 2-3/8 inch is the common bored-lock backset; for a mortise pocket you need the 2-3/4 inch layout.
3) Do I have to order the PM080 handed, or is it reversible in the field?
Handing is not an ordering decision here. The PM Series mortise case is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and a property manager can stock a single part for a whole building.
4) What cylinder options do I pick when ordering a Schlage PM080, and can I use my own SFIC cores?
Five cylinder choices: B less SFIC, J less FSIC, L less conventional 6-pin cylinder, P conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5, and T FSIC construction core. If you already key a building on small format interchangeable core, order the B option and drop your own cores in. Choose P only if you want Schlage's conventional 6-pin supplied and keyed.
5) What size mortise pocket does the PM080 case need, and does it drop into a Schlage L Series prep?
Case size is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). Do not assume an L Series prep works: PM and L Series case and cover holes differ, so the mounting holes will not line up even though the pocket is similar. Hub spacing is 3-7/8 inches (98 mm) lever to cylinder and 2-11/16 inches (68 mm) lever to thumbturn hub.
6) What is a direct cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage PM080 storeroom mortise lock?
Two Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks cross closely to the Schlage PM080: the Accentra 8805FL, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080, a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset offered with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. All three carry the same Grade 1 rating and storeroom function, so the decision usually comes down to lever and rose styling and which keying platform the building already standardizes on. The PM080 itself is a keyed Grade 1 mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and field reversible handing.
7) I need a classroom function instead of storeroom in a mortise lock - what should I order?
The Schlage PM080 is a storeroom function lock, so for a classroom opening look to a classroom-function mortise lockset instead. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both keep the Grade 1 rating you get with the PM080 while changing how the outside lever is controlled.
8) Are Baldwin 6310 mortise locks interchangeable with the Schlage PM080?
They are not a drop-in swap. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset and is listed for doors 1-3/8 inch and over, with a lever-by-lever version offered as the 6310190RRLS in right hand reverse. The Schlage PM080 is built for a 2-3/4 inch backset only and is field reversible for handing, so the lock case pocket location in the door differs between the two.
9) Can I get a storeroom mortise lock that is electrically controlled for an access control tie-in?
Yes. The Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in storeroom function with field selectable fail safe or fail secure operation on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. The Schlage PM080 is a mechanical, non-electronic storeroom lock, so those are the path when the opening needs to release from a card reader or a panel.
10) Which finishes does the Playa lever PM080 come in, and can I match it to other hardware in the building?
Six finishes: 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 643E Aged Bronze. The PM Series is made to suite with other Allegion products, and it shares lever and rose styles with the PT Series tubular locks, so you can run the same Playa lever look across mortise openings and lighter bored-lock openings.
11) Is the Schlage PM080 heavy duty enough for a commercial storeroom or stairwell door?
It is a Grade 1 commercial mortise lock in the storeroom function, with a cold rolled steel case carrying corrosion resistant zinc dichromate plating and stainless steel latch and deadbolt. Grade 1 is the highest ANSI/BHMA duty level, which is what specifiers call for on high traffic openings.
12) What mortise lock should I use for a door that does not need to be keyed?
The Schlage PM080 is a keyed storeroom lock, so on a closet, corridor or other non-secured opening a passage or office lock is the better fit. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks with a 2-3/4 inch backset in rose and escutcheon trim respectively, and the Hager 3850E is a non-keyed Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon. The Hager 3810 units list a 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch door thickness range.
13) Is there an electronic version of a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock if I want to drop keys?
The Schlage PM080 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. If the opening calls for credentials instead of keys, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125 kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID technology for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes in classroom function for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. These change the credential and the door thickness range, so confirm the door before switching.
14) Can I use a Sargent 4874 or Kaba Ilco 185 in place of the Schlage PM080?
No - those are deadbolt-only mortise units, not lever locksets. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt. Neither provides a latchbolt operated by a lever. The Schlage PM080 is a lever-operated keyed storeroom mortise lock, so a deadbolt would have to be paired with separate latching trim rather than substituted.
15) What is the difference between the Schlage PM080 and the Sargent 7925 for a dormitory corridor door?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in the 7900 Series with corridor/dormitory exit function, rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Schlage PM080 is a Grade 1 storeroom function lock with a lever, offered in A, C and D rose or N escutcheon trim. If the room needs a deadbolt thrown from inside, the 7925 covers that; if the door only needs to stay locked outside with key access, the PM080 storeroom function is the simpler arrangement.
16) For a behavioral health or ligature-resistant opening, is the PM080 appropriate?
The Schlage PM080 uses a standard Playa lever, which is not a ligature-resistant design. For those openings the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 offers the same passage function with ligature-resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 ligature-resistant hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ADA compliant. Note all three are passage function, so they do not key-lock the way the storeroom PM080 does.
17) What do I use instead of the PM080 on a restroom or privacy door?
Storeroom function locks like the Schlage PM080 keep the outside lever locked at all times with key access, which is not what a restroom needs. For privacy, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset listed for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors - the same backset the PM080 uses, which helps if you are working from one door prep across a floor.
18) What is the difference between the Schlage PM080 and the Cal-Royal NM8050 office lock?
Function. The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, which allows the outside lever to be left unlocked for business hours. The Schlage PM080 is Grade 1 storeroom function, where the outside lever stays locked and entry is by key. Pick the NM8050 for a suite door staff want to leave open, and the PM080 for a stockroom or utility room that should never be left unlocked.
19) Does the Schlage PM080 have any electronic or credential capability?
No, the PM080 is a mechanical keyed mortise lock with no electronics. If you need access control on the same door prep, the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock is a Grade 1 standalone electronic with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage ENGAGE LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader. The PM Series itself does offer three electrified functions among its 26, ordered as separate models.
20) Is a BEST 45H mortise lock body a substitute for the Schlage PM080?
The BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCA Series is a heavy duty lockbody with intruder function. Those are different functions than the storeroom PM080, and they are lock bodies rather than a complete lever and trim package. The Schlage PM080 ships as a keyed storeroom mortise lock with lever trim and a 10-072 ANSI strike with box. If you only need to replace a case behind existing trim, a lock body is the right category; for a full opening, match the function first.
