1) Is the 3M Scotch 303 buried barricade tape sticky, or is it just a marker ribbon?
It's non-adhesive. The Scotch 303 tape has no adhesive at all, just a 4 mil polyethylene film ribbon printed CAUTION BURIED ELECTRIC LINE BELOW. It goes in the trench above the conduit or cable as a warning layer for whoever digs there next, not on anything.
2) Is red the right color for a buried electric line, or should I be using a different tape?
Red is the correct warning color for electric, and this one is printed specifically CAUTION BURIED ELECTRIC LINE BELOW. If you're marking gas, water, sewer, or communications instead, you want the 303 tape in the color and legend for that utility, not the red electric version.
3) Does buried barricade tape make the line detectable with a locator?
No. The 303 is plain polyethylene film with no metallic core, so a cable locator won't pick it up. It's a visual warning for the excavator once the bucket reaches that depth. If you need the run traceable from the surface, you need detectable tape with a metallized foil layer or a separate tracer wire.
4) Will 3M 303 barricade tape hold up being pulled tight down a long trench without tearing?
The film runs 4,400 psi tensile in the machine direction and 3,900 psi cross direction, with elongation at break of 400 percent MD and 500 percent TD. It stretches a long way before it lets go, so backfill settling and equipment brushing it tends to deform it rather than snap it.
5) Can I use Scotch 303 tape in a trench in cold weather or on a hot summer day?
The service range is 0 to 120 degrees F (0 to 49 degrees C). Below freezing ambient it's outside the stated range, so on a hard winter dig you want to check conditions before you run a whole case.
