1) Does Scotch Arc Proofing Tape 77 stick to itself, or do I need something else to hold the wrap?
Scotch 77 arc proofing tape is non-adhesive, so the wrap will not hold on its own. You apply it as a wrapped layer over the cable and then band or secure it in place. Plan on a separate securing method as part of the job, because nothing on the tape itself will hold the lap.
2) Can I install arc proofing tape 77 in a cold manhole or unheated vault?
Minimum operating temperature is 0 degrees C, so it is not rated for installation or service below freezing. For cold-weather duct bank and manhole work, warm the rolls and the cable surface, or schedule the wrap when conditions are above 0 C.
3) What actually protects the cable in a fault, and does the tape burn?
The backing is an intumescent elastomer: under the heat of an adjacent cable failure it swells and chars into an insulating barrier over the cable it is wrapped on. The tape is self-extinguishing, so it does not carry flame, and it is UV resistant for outdoor and exposed runs.
