Metallics JPMP36F – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 10-32 x 3/4 pan head screw thread into a standard steel electrical box or device bracket?
Yes. 10-32 is the machine screw thread used for device mounting and grounding in steel boxes, plaster rings and mud rings, and the Metallics JPMP36F is a 10-32 x 3/4 inch pan head Phillips screw. Because it is a Type F thread cutting screw, it will also cut its own thread in an unthreaded or paint fouled hole of the correct pilot size, so you do not need to chase the hole with a tap first.
2) What does Type F mean on a machine screw, and how is it different from a plain machine screw?
Type F is a thread cutting screw: it carries a standard 10-32 machine screw thread but has a blunt point with cutting slots at the tip, so it taps its own mating thread as it drives into an untapped hole in sheet metal or a casting. A plain 10-32 machine screw only works in a hole that is already tapped or in a nut. That makes the JPMP36F useful when the factory thread in a box ear or bracket is stripped, painted over, or was never there.
3) Is the JPMP36F screw steel or stainless?
Steel. The JPMP36F is a plain steel machine screw, which is what the great majority of interior box, device and bracket fastening calls for. For wet, exterior or corrosive locations, specify a stainless 10-32 instead rather than using this one.
4) Is 3/4 inch long enough for mounting a device or plaster ring, or should I use a shorter screw?
The 3/4 inch length on the JPMP36F gives you extra reach for stacked assemblies, a ring over a box ear, or a bracket with a spacer behind it. For a flush device yoke straight onto a box, 3/4 inch often leaves thread sticking out past the back of the hole, which is harmless in a box ear but can foul a crowded wiring compartment. If you need the screw to bottom flush, step down to a 1/2 inch 10-32.
5) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JPMP36F?
100 screws per jar. The jar pack is the shelf and van friendly format for a fastener an electrician burns through a handful at a time, and the wide mouth jar beats a poly bag when you are pulling screws one at a time on a ladder.
6) What driver do I need for these screws?
A Phillips driver. The JPMP36F has a pan head with a Phillips recess, so a #2 Phillips bit covers it on a 10-32 head. Pan head means a rounded top with a flat bearing underside, so it seats on the surface rather than countersinking, which is what you want on a box ear or sheet metal bracket.
