Metallics JSS14316 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a 1/4-20 cup point set screw to replace a lost lug or fitting screw on electrical gear?
Only if the original was the same 1/4-20 thread and the 3/16 inch length seats correctly. The JSS14316 is sold as an electrical fastener, and 1/4-20 cup point socket set screws are a common replacement for the clamping screws in mechanical lugs, conduit bodies and fixture collars. Thread the replacement in by hand first to confirm the pitch engages freely, and check that 3/16 inch is long enough to reach the conductor or shaft, a deeper boss may need a longer screw.
2) What tool do I need to drive this 1/4-20 socket set screw?
A hex key. The JSS14316 is a socket set screw, meaning the drive is an internal hex recess in the end of the screw rather than an external head. A 1/4-20 socket set screw takes a 1/8 inch hex key. There is no head to grip with a wrench or screwdriver, so plan on an Allen key or hex bit.
3) What is a cup point set screw used for, and will it mark the shaft?
The cup point is a hollow, ring-shaped tip with a sharp circular edge that bites into the mating surface, which is why it's the most common set screw point for holding a collar, pulley, lug or knob on a shaft. It will leave a ring-shaped indent on the shaft, and that's the point, it resists rotation. If you need a joint that can be disassembled without marring the shaft, use a flat point instead; if the shaft already has a drilled seat or flat, a cone or oval point matches that better.
4) Is the JSS14316 set screw steel or stainless?
Steel. The JSS14316 is a plain steel cup point socket set screw, not stainless. For wet, outdoor or corrosive locations, specify a stainless or coated set screw in the same 1/4-20 x 3/16 size instead.
5) How many Metallics JSS14316 screws come in a jar?
100 pieces per jar. Metallics packs this 1/4-20 x 3/16 socket set screw in a jar rather than a box or bag, which is the pack type service techs and electricians usually want on the truck for loose small fasteners.
