Metallics 180R2B – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Metallics 180R2B square bit fit a standard 1/4 inch hex quick-change chuck?
Yes. The 180R2B has a 1/4 inch hex shank, so it drops straight into a quick-change impact driver collet or a 1/4 inch hex bit holder in a drill chuck. It is a #2 square (Robertson) drive tip, 8 inches overall.
2) What screw sizes does a #2 square drive bit like the Metallics 180R2B drive?
The 180R2B is sized for #8 to #10 square-drive screws, which covers most of the self-drilling and combination-head screws used on electrical boxes, strut, and panel work. For smaller #6 and under you want a #1 square tip; for #12 and up, a #3.
3) Why use an 8 inch long square bit instead of a short 1 inch insert bit?
Reach. At 8 inches the 180R2B gets the driver body clear of the work, which is what you need when you are setting screws down inside a deep box, through a stud bay, behind a panel, or in a recessed knockout where a 1 inch insert bit and holder would bottom out. For flush, open work a short insert bit gives you better control and less tip wobble.
4) Is a square drive bit the right choice for the screws on my electrical boxes, or should I use Phillips?
If the screw heads have a square recess, use a square bit like the Metallics #2 square (180R2B). Square drive resists cam-out far better than Phillips under impact, which is why it is common on self-drilling box, strut, and panel screws. Many combination-head screws accept both, and on those the square tip still gives you the better bite. On a true Phillips recess a square bit will chew the head, so match the recess.
5) How many bits come in a Metallics 180R2B pack?
One bit per pack, supplied in a pouch. If you are stocking a crew or a service van, order by the quantity you need rather than expecting a multi-pack.
6) What part number do I order for the Metallics 8 inch #2 square bit?
Order Metallics 180R2B. That is the manufacturer part number for the 8 inch, 1/4 inch hex shank, #2 square point bit.
