Metallics TP818SOC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver do I need for the Metallics TP818SOC spanner-head screw?
These take a spanner bit, also called a snake-eye or pig-nose bit, matched to a #10 oval head. Two round pins on the bit drop into the two holes in the screw head. A Phillips, slot, or Torx driver will not engage it, so order the bit along with the screws if your techs don't already carry one. That tamper-resistant head is the whole point of the part: once it's driven, nobody removes it with a standard screwdriver from a truck box.
2) Will a 10-24 x 3/8 machine screw thread into sheet metal, or do I need a tapped hole?
It needs a mating thread. 10-24 is a machine screw thread, 24 threads per inch, so it goes into a tapped hole, a 10-24 nut, or a factory-threaded boss or clip, not into bare sheet metal or wood. At only 3/8 inch of length, there is very little thread to work with either, so it's intended for thin stacked material such as a cover plate or faceplate over an already-threaded enclosure or device. If you are fastening into unthreaded sheet, you want a self-tapping or sheet metal screw instead.
3) Are these Metallics tamper screws stainless, and can they go outdoors or in a wet location?
They are 18-8 stainless, an austenitic stainless grade with roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. That gives good corrosion resistance for exterior and damp interior work, which is why it gets used on outdoor enclosures, pool and locker room fixtures, and transit or public-space hardware where a plated steel screw would rust and seize. For salt-spray or coastal exposure, 316 stainless is the step up.
4) What does the oval head on the TP818SOC sit like against the plate?
An oval head is a countersunk 82 degree underside with a low domed top, so it seats into a countersunk or chamfered hole and leaves a slight rounded crown proud of the surface. It needs a countersunk hole to pull in properly. If your plate has flat, uncountersunk holes you want a pan or truss head instead, and if you need the fastener fully flush, that calls for a flat head.
5) How many screws come in a pack of Metallics TP818SOC?
One hundred pieces per pack. For an MRO or facilities buyer standardizing on tamper-resistant fasteners, that quantity covers a building's worth of cover plates and still leaves spares, and buying the whole box keeps the head style consistent so your crews only need to carry one spanner bit.
