Metallics TP609SBC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics TP609SBC tamper resistant screw?
You need a pin-in-star (tamper resistant Torx) bit, not a standard star bit. The TP609SBC is a button head star drive with a center pin, so a solid star bit will bottom out on the pin and won't seat. Carry the pin-in bit on the truck if you're installing these in the field, since a regular T-handle Torx set won't drive them.
2) Is the Metallics TP609SBC screw stainless, and can I use it outdoors or in damp locations?
It's 18-8 stainless steel, the common 300-series austenitic grade used for general corrosion resistance. That makes it suitable for damp and exterior work where a plain or zinc plated screw would rust out, such as outdoor enclosures, covers, and security plates. For heavy chloride exposure like coastal or pool environments, 316 is the grade to specify instead.
3) Will a #10 x 3/4 button head sheet metal screw work in a pre-drilled hole or does it need a pilot?
The TP609SBC is a sheet metal screw, so it cuts its own thread in sheet stock but still wants a pilot hole sized for the #10 shank in thicker gauge material. It is not self-drilling, there is no drill point on it, so in anything beyond thin sheet you drill first. Button head means a low rounded profile that sits proud of the surface, not flush, so don't countersink the hole.
4) Why would I spec a pin-in-star screw instead of a standard Phillips sheet metal screw?
Security. The pin-in-star head is a tamper resistant drive, so covers, enclosures, panel plates and fixtures fastened with it can't be opened with a screwdriver out of anyone's pocket. Property managers and MRO crews use them on public-facing hardware in lobbies, restrooms, corridors and transit areas. If nobody is likely to tamper with the assembly, a standard Phillips or star drive #10 sheet metal screw does the same mechanical job for less hassle on the install.
5) Can I mix these stainless tamper screws with steel enclosures without a corrosion problem?
18-8 stainless against plain or galvanized steel is a common pairing and is generally fine in dry interior work. In persistently wet exterior conditions the galvanic couple will attack the zinc coating around the fastener first, so seal or isolate the joint if the enclosure is in weather. The 3/4 inch length also means limited thread engagement, which matters more than the metallurgy on thin sheet.
