Metallics TP704SBC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need a special driver for the pin-in hex button head screws?
Yes. The head takes a pin-in-hex (also called pin-in-socket) bit, not a plain hex key. The center pin in the driver seats in a hole drilled in the screw head, so a standard Allen wrench will not turn it. That's the point of it, and you need to have the matching tamper bit on hand before you start the install. The driver is not included with the 100 piece pack.
2) Is 1/2 inch long enough, or will the screw bottom out?
At 1/2 inch of overall thread length, you've got enough to pass through a panel ear or bracket and still get full engagement in a tapped hole. Where it falls short is thicker stacks: two brackets plus a washer can eat most of that 1/2 inch and leave only a thread or two biting. For those, step up to a longer 12-24 screw rather than relying on this one.
3) Why use a tamper resistant screw instead of a standard hex head here?
Pin-in hex heads are specified where you don't want the public, tenants, or untrained staff opening a panel, cover, or rack door. The pin blocks a common Allen key, so removal takes the matching security bit. A standard hex or Phillips screw is faster for anything you service often; the tamper head is for covers that should stay closed between authorized visits. Same 12-24 x 1/2 inch footprint either way, so it drops into existing tapped holes.
4) How many screws come in a box of Metallics TP704SBC?
100 pieces per pack, which is the quantity that makes sense for MRO stock or a rack buildout where you're setting dozens of fasteners at once. If you only need a handful for one cover plate, you're still buying the 100 count.
5) Is the button head low profile enough for a flush cover?
A button head sits low and rounded rather than tall and faceted like a standard hex head, so it clears panel doors and adjacent equipment better. It is not flush, though. If the drawing calls for a screw that sits level with the surface, you need a flat head countersunk screw in a chamfered hole, not this button head.
