Metallics TP219SFC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver do I need for a star pin tamper resistant screw like the TP219SFC?
It takes a pin-in-star (pin-in-Torx) bit, not a standard Torx. The TP219SFC head has a six-lobe recess with a pin in the center, so a plain Torx bit bottoms out on the pin and will not seat. You need the matching pinned bit in the correct size, and that bit is not supplied with the screws.
2) Why would I use a tamper resistant screw instead of a standard flat head machine screw on electrical equipment?
Tamper resistant hardware is used where you do not want the public opening a cover: enclosure doors, panel covers, device plates, fixture housings in common areas, transit and school settings. Because the TP219SFC uses a pin-in-star recess, it cannot be backed out with a common screwdriver or an ordinary Torx bit, which deters casual removal. For anything inside a locked room where only maintenance has access, a standard 1/4-20 flat head is usually enough.
3) Does the flat head on the TP219SFC sit flush with the surface?
Yes, provided the hole is countersunk. A flat head screw is designed to seat in a chamfered or countersunk hole and finish flush with the face. On a drilled hole with no countersink, the 1-1/4 inch TP219SFC will stand proud of the surface, so check the prep on the cover or plate before ordering.
4) Will a 1-1/4 inch long 1/4-20 screw be long enough for my panel cover?
The TP219SFC gives 1-1/4 inches of total length from under the head, so your cover thickness plus the depth of thread engagement has to fall inside that. Rule of thumb for a tapped hole is at least one diameter of engagement, which here is 1/4 inch, so it works on cover stacks up to about one inch thick. Thicker assemblies need a longer screw in the same 1/4-20 thread.
5) How many screws come in a pack of Metallics TP219SFC?
They are packed 100 pieces per pack. For a maintenance or MRO crib that standardizes on tamper resistant covers, that is one pack per roughly 25 four-screw covers, so order accordingly rather than per-piece.
