Metallics TP602SBC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What drive does the Metallics TP602SBC screw use, and do I need a special bit?
It's a pin-in star (tamper resistant Torx) drive, so a standard Torx bit won't seat. You need a security Torx bit with a hole bored in the tip to clear the center pin. That's the whole point of the TR designation: covers, enclosures, and panels fastened with these can't be opened with a common driver set.
2) Is the TP602SBC a machine screw or a sheet metal screw?
Sheet metal screw. The SMS thread is a coarse, fully threaded self-tapping form meant to bite into sheet steel, aluminum, or plastic through a pilot hole, not to run into a tapped hole or a nut. If your part has machine threads already cut, this is the wrong fastener.
3) Will these #6 x 1 inch stainless screws rust outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
They're 18-8 stainless, the common austenitic grade used for general corrosion resistance, so they hold up well outdoors, in damp mechanical rooms, and in washdown areas far better than zinc-plated steel. 18-8 is not the grade for direct saltwater immersion.
4) How does a button head sit on the surface compared with a flat head screw?
Button head sits on top of the material with a low, rounded dome and a flat bearing underside, so it does not need a countersink. Flat head needs a chamfered hole to finish flush. If your panel or cover plate has countersunk holes, the TP602SBC will stand proud of the surface and may not clamp evenly.
5) How many Metallics TP602SBC screws come in a box?
100 pieces per box, all #6 x 1 inch. For a security-fastener job that's worth knowing up front, since the pin-in star driver is a separate purchase and you'll want enough screws to standardize every cover or enclosure on the site rather than mixing drive types across a building.
6) What part number do I order for the #6 x 1 tamper resistant stainless sheet metal screw?
Metallics TP602SBC. That one number covers the #6 x 1 inch button head, pin-in star drive, 18-8 stainless sheet metal screw in the 100 piece box.
