Metallics TP107SBC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for a button head pin-in-hex security screw like the TP107SBC?
It takes a pin-in-hex (hex pin) security bit, not a standard Allen key. The recess is a hex socket with a solid post in the center, so a plain hex wrench bottoms out on the pin and will not turn it. For an 8-32 head you want the matching pin-hex bit size in a security bit set, and it is worth ordering the bit at the same time as the screws if you don't already carry one.
2) Are these stainless steel screws, and will they hold up outdoors?
They are 18-8 stainless, the common austenitic grade used for general corrosion resistance. 18-8 handles outdoor, damp, and washdown exposure well, which is why it gets specified for exterior cover plates, enclosures, and public fixtures. For direct salt spray or coastal marine exposure, 316 stainless is the step up.
3) Why would I use a tamper resistant screw instead of a regular machine screw on electrical covers?
The point is to keep the public out of it. A pin-in-hex screw can't be backed out with a screwdriver or a standard hex key, so it gets used on receptacle and switch plates, enclosure covers, light fixture housings, and panel trim in schools, transit stops, correctional facilities, and multi-family common areas. The TP107SBC does that job in an 8-32 x 1 inch size, so it drops into the same tapped holes a standard 8-32 cover screw uses. The low-profile button head also leaves less for someone to grab with pliers than a hex head would.
4) Is the 1 inch length right for a device plate, or is that too long?
One inch is a long machine screw for a flush plate, where 1/2 inch is typical. The 1 inch length is for stacking through thickness: spacers, gasketed or weatherproof covers, thick trim, or a plate set out from a deep ring where the standard screw no longer reaches the device strap. Measure from the face of the cover to the tapped hole and pick accordingly, because excess length just bottoms into the box.
5) How many screws come in a box of Metallics TP107SBC?
100 pieces per box. For an MRO or facilities crew standardizing cover plate security across a building, that covers roughly 50 two-screw plates, so count your openings and whether you want spares on the shelf before deciding how many boxes to pull.
