Metallics TP811SOC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver do I need for the spanner tamper-resistant screw head on the TP811SOC?
It takes a spanner (snake-eye) bit, not a Phillips or a Torx. The head has two round holes set opposite each other, and a matching two-pin spanner driver bit is the only thing that will turn it, which is the whole point of the tamper-resistant drive. Order the spanner bit alongside the screws if your crew does not already carry one, otherwise the fasteners cannot be installed or removed.
2) Are these 18-8 stainless screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
They are 18-8 stainless steel, which is the common 300-series austenitic grade used for general corrosion resistance, so they hold up in damp interior and sheltered exterior work far better than plated carbon steel. For direct salt exposure or coastal installs, a 316 stainless fastener is the better choice. 18-8 is also non-magnetic in the annealed condition, which matters on some sensitive equipment enclosures.
3) Will an oval head screw sit flush, or does it stick up above the plate?
The TP811SOC has an oval head, which is a countersunk 82-degree underside with a slightly domed top. In a countersunk hole the taper seats fully and only the low crown shows above the surface, so it is close to flush but not perfectly flat like a flat head. If your plate or panel is punched for a flat head and you need dead flush, this is not the right profile.
4) Can I use these machine screws in a drilled hole in sheet metal without a nut?
No. Machine screws like the 8-32 x 1/2 TP811SOC have uniform machine threads and need a tapped hole or a nut to engage; they will not cut their own thread. For an untapped hole in sheet metal you want a self-tapping or sheet metal screw instead, or tap the hole 8-32 first.
5) How many screws come in a pack of Metallics TP811SOC?
Each pack of TP811SOC holds 100 screws. That is a box quantity meant for institutional and MRO work where the same tamper-resistant screw goes on every plate or enclosure in a facility, so one pack standardizes a lot of openings at once.
