1) Will the SDC FS23M electric bolt lock work on a sliding door, or is it only for swinging doors?
Both. The FS23M Spacesaver right angle mortise bolt is built for sliding and swinging doors, in new construction or retrofit. That is one of the reasons it gets used on storefront and perimeter openings where a strike-and-latch device won't work: the bolt throws at a right angle into a 4 x 1-1/2 x 1-9/16 inch door strike rather than needing a conventional latch prep.
2) Will an electric bolt lock fit a narrow aluminum stile door?
The FS23M has an 8 x 1-1/2 x 1/8 inch face plate, which is what lets it mortise into narrow lock stiles as well as standard door frames. The bolt itself is 3/8 inch solid stainless. If your stile is narrower than the 1-1/2 inch face plate dimension, this is not the device for the opening.
3) Can I use an electric bolt lock on a fire rated exit door and still pass inspection?
The FS23M is the electric bolt lock approved by the California State Fire Marshal for after-hours locking of perimeter entrance and emergency exit doors, listing 3774-0324:0001, and it is certified to the UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test. If your panel logs forced-door or bolt-not-secure events, you want both, and it has to be specified at time of order.
6) What exactly do I have to specify when ordering an SDC Spacesaver FS23M?
Three things: the model, FS23MI, then the finish code, then any monitoring options (D for door position status, B for bolt position status). It relocks on its own. A ball switch holds the FS23M bolt retracted the whole time the door stands open and re-engages it automatically once the door closes, so there's no risk of the bolt firing into the edge of an open door. The switch is field adjustable for wide door gaps, which is what you'll be reaching for on an older frame or a sliding door that doesn't sit tight.
8) Should I use an electric mortise bolt or an electric strike on a perimeter door?
An electric strike releases an existing latch, so it needs a lockset and it works on swinging doors only.
